The Ultimate Techie Gift Guide for 2018

Give the gift of cool new tech this holiday season.

One of the most fun and challenging things about the holiday season is finding new gifts for the people you love. How do you get something you know they’ll enjoy – will still surprise them? The best way to do that is to lean on the latest and greatest in tech. After all, new innovations are always right around the corner.

Here’s our gift guide for the best new tech gifts for all the different types of people in your life, just in time for the holidays.

For the kids

It’s no secret that kids love technology, and littleBits helps them explore science, technology, engineering and math with electronic building blocks. Their new line of inventor kits come with helpful instructions, but they also leave room for kids to invent something entirely new. My personal favorite is the Electronic Music Inventor Kit, which lets little inventors build musical instruments, like a keytar, a Theremin and more. Rock on!

This line of pint-sized headphones is tailored specifically for little ears. BuddyPhones has patented SafeAudio technology, which allows the listener (or the parent) to choose from four different listening modes: ToddlerMode, KidsMode, TravelMode and StudyMode. These different modes prevent kids from damaging their hearing at high volumes. BuddyPhones are also ultra-durable, with a bendy headband and water-resistant speakers. Kids will love the BuddyCable, which allows them to share their music with their friends by plugging multiple headphones into the same jack.

For the group photographer

Polaroid Mint

Polaroid’s new camera is unlike anything I’ve seen from them before. The Polaroid Mint is a brightly-colored rectangle with a lens, a flash and a tiny mirror (for selfies) tucked in one corner. Like most Polaroid cameras, it prints its photos instantly. It’s also a digital camera, and can accommodate a MicroSD card to save your pictures. Polaroid also offers the Polaroid Mint Instant Digital Pocket Printer, which connects to an app to print pictures straight from your phone.

AirSelfie is a compact drone with four tiny propellers that can be controlled via an app to hover about, taking HD pictures and video. The drone generates its own Wi-Fi, and can stay airborne for around an hour before it needs to be recharged. This is the perfect gift for someone looking to take their pictures to the next level – literally.

For the world traveler

Pocketalk is like a gadget from science fiction: a small, egg-shaped device that can translate over 70 different languages. This translator is a more intuitive option than using an app on your phone – it’s powered by an internal AI and sports a powerful microphone. You can talk to the locals no matter where you travel with this portable polyglot.

Rough and tumble travelers will love Catalyst phone cases. These impact-resistant and waterproof cases can protect your smartphone from almost anything. A Catalyst user once demonstrated their love of the product to me by nonchalantly throwing their phone to the ground. That’s how safe they are.

TripIt is an app designed to hold all the digital “stuff” you need for travel – like plane tickets, hotel reservations and more. Simply forward your important travel emails to TripIt, and it will create a personal itinerary for you. TripIt is free, but you can upgrade to TripIt Pro for perks like automatic itinerary updates, real-time flight alerts and more.
