As smoke from Canadian wildfires triggers air quality alerts across the region, AAA Northeast is offering tips for drivers to stay safe on the road in smoky conditions:
- Drive with your windows closed to keep hazardous particles from entering the cabin.
- Set your vents to “recirculate” to prevent outside air from entering the vehicle. Look for a button or setting that shows a circular arrow symbol. Check your owner’s manual if you’re unsure how to toggle the recirculating setting.
- Replace your cabin air filter. A new cabin air filter can capture small particles and improve the quality of air coming through the vents, especially if air recirculation is active. Consider purchasing a filter with HEPA filtration to block smoke particles and other fine particulates that a basic filter can’t. Some filters are treated with activated carbon, which can help block odors.
- Improve your visibility by driving the same way you would in bad weather — increase your following distance, slow down and create space to let other drivers merge or change lanes.
Those traveling by air should be aware of impacts from the smoke, which might include flight delays. Plan a flight as early in the day as possible and download your airline’s app to get notified of a delay or cancellation.
