Prices dropped steadily since late May, but uncertainty about a ceasefire and volatility along the Strait of Hormuz sent crude oil prices up last week, and prices at the pump followed suit. Following continued strikes over the weekend, futures for West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude oil were both up as of early Monday morning.
The price jumps come despite a drop in gasoline demand, which decreased in the lead up to the long Fourth of July weekend from 9.13 million barrels a day to 8.84 million, according to the latest figures from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). That figure is 314,000 barrels a day lower than the same week last year. Despite the slight drop in demand, EIA data shows total domestic gasoline supply dropped as well, from 214 million barrels to 212.1 million — 6% below seasonal averages.
“Oil prices — and gas prices in turn — remain reactive to developments in the war with Iran, and markets are responding to escalating strikes and increased uncertainty regarding the Strait of Hormuz,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “Despite the latest increases in prices at the pump, current gas prices remain significantly lower than a month ago and their peak in May.”
AAA’s July 13 survey of fuel prices found the national average up 8 cents from the previous week ($3.79), averaging $3.87 per gallon. The July 13 national average price was 21 cents lower than the previous month ($4.08) and 72 cents higher than the previous year ($3.15).
As of July 13, Indiana and Texas had the lowest prices in the nation at $3.23 and $3.42, respectively. Hawaii and California had the highest prices at $5.44 and $5.38, respectively.
