National Lighthouse Museum 2021 Season

April 29, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

$10 – $30

The National Lighthouse Museum is extremely pleased to announce its 2021 season is returning with a wide range of exciting and fun-filled educational programs.

On May 16, we launch the season with our challenging GREAT Staten Island Lighthouse HUNT. Staten Island is home to nine historic lighthouses, often located in a number of obscure areas of the borough. The GREAT Staten Island Lighthouse HUNT offers participants opportunities to gain valuable maritime-related historical insights and up-close familiarity with each of these nine lighthouses, the neighborhoods in which these structures are situated and the nature of New Jersey and NYC’s robust intertwining economy.

Knowledgeable NLM volunteers will welcome you at each lighthouse and, upon your arrival, certify that you have visited each lighthouse as they share their expertise regarding the history, architecture and specific purpose for which each of these historic structures was originally designed. We are proud to once again have Con Edison as our key sponsor. The tour is $30 per carload and $10 per biker and one can start at the Museum site or at Conference House Park.

NLM’s boat season will commence on a most appropriate date: May 22, (MARITIME DAY) with a new and fascinating tour, one designed to familiarize participants with the busiest waterway of NYC, the Kill Van Kull and Newark Bay. Along the route of our very first foray into Newark Bay, vast modern container facilities place Newark, (once America’s 4th largest economy) and Elizabeth, at the forefront of East Coast commercial activity. We learn about obscure islands located upon the Kill Van Kull such as Shooters, and Prall on the Arthur Kill. This boat tour further explores the vital commercial port of Bayonne where military vessels, an historic Port of Embarkation, and, in recent years, giant cruise ships have bolstered Bayonne’s burgeoning economy in keeping with its maritime reputation. Manufacturing plants of great national importance and pioneering retail businesses together with its famed port facilities would turn Newark into one of America’s most important and prosperous cities.

In collaboration with The United Staten Island Veterans Organization (USIVO), we will celebrate Maritime Day with a wreath laying ceremony honoring extraordinarily courageous members of the Merchant Marines who, in past conflicts, gave their lives in support of our freedoms.

Our Boat Tour schedule during 2021 explores lighthouses throughout NYC as well as prominent sites and islands located along the East River, Long Island Sound, the Hudson River, as well as the fascinating water route encircling Staten Island. Our SIGNATURE BOAT TOUR covers nine lighthouses and important sites surrounding Lower NY Bay, through Ambrose Channel passing Sandy Hook and reaching the stunning Twin Lights of Navesink Lighthouse situated atop New Jersey’s beautiful Atlantic Highlands.

In late October, our popular Halloween tour northward up the East River to Long Island Sound at Execution Rocks and Sands Point Lighthouses contains consistently horrifying tales of ghosts, murder and mayhem. Check our website or call for details. Tickets for our three hour tour are $60 for adults; $50 for groups of 10 or more and $40 for children

Just two days after our Kill Van Kull/ Newark Bay boat tour of May 22, NLM will host an all day Boating Safety Course in collaboration with the SI Power Squadron will be held on May 24 at the Museum. This certified course, will soon becoming a requirement for captaining small craft in our waters.

For more information, visit Lighthousemuseum.org or call the museum at 718-390-0040.

NLM follows all requisite COVID-19 protocols and, in conformity with safe distance practice, our boats will be filled to 50% capacity.

We welcome you to join NLM for what promises to be an enlightening and fun-filled 2021!
