When it comes to “hot” hatchbacks, most people think of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Subaru Impreza WRX STi, Honda Civic Si or Ford Focus ST. These small cars are nimble, quick and fun to drive. The latest car in this segment is the Hyundai Veloster R-Spec. My road test vehicle featured a 201-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbocharged engine coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. Safety features include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping monitoring and a system that alerts the driver when it’s time for a break. The 201-horsepower, turbocharged engine and six-speed manual transmission made this car fun to drive. The handling gave the front-wheel-drive car a nimble feel. Add in the optional turbocharged engine and the Veloster rivals the best of the hot-hatch competition.
Price as tested: $23,765
26/33 mpg
Engine: 4-cylinder 201 horsepower
