My First Car: Samantha Brown

Samantha Brown Remembers Her Saab Turbo 900

When it comes to traveling, few have accumulated more miles than Samantha Brown. The host of “Samantha Brown’s Places to Love” on PBS has visited more than 250 cities in 62 countries and crisscrossed the U.S. to see 40 different states. The Texas native was raised in the Northeast when her family moved to New Hampshire. It’s there where her “traveling” career started – driving around in her first car.

What was your first car?

A Saab Turbo 900.

How did you acquire it?

It was passed down from my dad.

What did you love most about it?

I loved this car. My dad loves to change cars, so it had a modified turbo wing on the back that made it look really cool.

What didn’t you like about it?

The ignition was broken. I’d have to always park it on a small incline so I could manually start it by releasing the emergency brake then popping it into gear and laying on the gas. (I think that’s how I did it. It’s been awhile).

What’s your best memory of it?

I was 16 and I had the coolest car of all my friends. Now I drive a minivan.
