Road Trip to the Finger Lakes

Ready for a road trip worth bragging about? With glimmering lakes, an impressive, food and wine scene and a wealth of outdoor and cultural activities, you’re sure to be talking about New York State’s Finger Lakes long after you return.

Come and get inspired by all this stunning region has to offer.

First, Some Background

The 11 bodies of water comprising the Finger Lakes are located in 14 counties between Lake Ontario in New York and Pennsylvania. They were named after Iroquois tribes that once lived in the area.

The lakes were formed about 2 million years ago after glaciers that covered North America began to melt, carving out the long narrow lakes and leaving behind waterfalls and other formations.

Wine, Anyone?

A prime destination for wine lovers, the favorable microclimate and altitude of the Finger Lakes region make it one of the most ideal areas in the country for wine-making. The region boasts more than 150 wineries, each with its own identity, and was named one of the 10 Must-Visit Wine Regions in the U.S. by USA Today.

Wine tastings are only part of the experience; visitors can also explore different wine trails and attend wine events throughout the year. If do plan on drinking, do so responsibly and always designate a driver.

Be sure to add Pleasant Valley Wine Company to your itinerary. Founded in 1860, it is the oldest winery in the Finger Lakes region and home of the acclaimed Great Western brand of sparkling wines. At its flagship location in Hammondsport, visitors can get a glimpse into its history with a tour of the property’s eight historic buildings.

Enjoy the Lakes

Of course, there are plenty of lake experiences you don’t want to miss while here. Check out the local beaches for swimming and taking in the views.

Canandaigua Lake has three parks with beaches. Visitors can also book a cruise on the Canandaigua Lady, a replica of a double-decker paddle wheel steamship.

Kids especially will enjoy Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva, which in addition to a beach, marinas, picnic areas and three playgrounds, has a Sprayground with more than 100 water jets.

To experience the serenity of paddling on the water, there are many places you can rent kayaks, canoes and paddle boards.

In winter, the lakes and surrounding areas become a wonderland for skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating and other snowy activities.

Hike or Bike

From traditional to spiritual, rugged to leisurely, visitors will find hiking and biking trails that suit every activity level throughout the Finger Lakes State Parks. Watkins Glen State Park (famous for it’s stunning Gorge Trail), Letchworth State Park (also known as the “Grand Canyon of the East”) and Taughannock Falls State Park (boasting one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Northeast) are just a few favorites.

Finger Lakes Forest Immersion guided walks and retreats have their roots in Shinrin-Yoku, a Japanese practice designed to reconnect people with the forest. A one-and-a-half-mile walk could last three hours, to allow time for reflection.

If you are looking for more challenging terrain with a view, consider the High Tor Wildlife Management Area, which sprawls over 6,800 acres. There are over a dozen miles of hiking trails and access roads to the upland plateau; it’s a steep journey whether walking or driving but levels out for easier hiking and biking when you arrive. Here you can also cycle along the Lehigh Valley Rail Trail and explore the creeks and and gorges in Conklin Gully-Parish Glen and Clark Gully. Ponds, waterfalls, rivers, gorges, forests and open fields await!

The Manchester Gateway Trail offers a more leisurely experience, with a one-and-a-half mile long paved hiking, biking and running trail.

Culture and History

While outdoor activities are the main draw for the Finger Lakes region, there’s also a lot of interesting history to explore.

Look back on 200 years of communications technology at the Antique Wireless Association Communications Technology Museum in Bloomfield, such as the first transistor radio and a replica of the Titanic’s wireless room.

The Ganondagan State Historic Site in Victor is located where one of the largest towns settled by the Seneca tribe in the 17th century once thrived. Visitors can explore 500 years of the tribe’s history, culture and art.

Get a tour of Harriet Tubman’s homestead in Auburn, where the Underground Railroad conductor lived as a free woman for over 50 years at Harriet Tubman National Historic Park.

One of the area’s most popular attractions, Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion Historic Park, gives visitors a chance to tour an elaborate 40-room mansion on 52 acres in Canandaigua. The site includes multiple gardens and the Finger Lakes Wine Center, where you can sample 40 wines from area vineyards.

Aviation and motorcycle fans will enjoy the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport. Curtiss was a pioneer in the motorcycle and airplane industries.

Farm-to-Table Delights and More

Restaurants in the Finger Lakes often specialize in farm-to-table fare, featuring locally grown produce and local wine pairings.

Set within a historic Italian-style villa overlooking Seneca Lake, Diciannove Dieci uses its own garden herbs and features Finger Lakes wines on its menu. Enjoy your candlelit dinner with live music nightly

New York Kitchen makes comfort food with farm-fresh ingredients and a side of Canandaigua Lake views. If you want to get more hands-on, the restaurant also offers cooking classes.

Ask a Travel Advisor: The Perks of Staying at a Disney Hotel

One of the first things you’ll want to decide about your Walt Disney World vacation is where you’re going to stay. Will it be at a Disney resort or a hotel nearby? And if you’re staying on the property, what hotel should you choose? All of these choices will have an impact on your trip — and your budget, so it’s important to be informed about your options. We spoke to AAA travel advisor and Disney expert Cady DeBlois to get all the latest information on where you should stay when you’re visiting the mouse.

What are the benefits of staying at a Disney resort?

“First, you will be fully immersed in the Disney bubble,” said Cady DeBlois. “The theming at each resort is very detailed and thought out by the Imagineers. It’s like you’re in your own little world there. You won’t have to worry about driving to the parks or sitting in traffic. Transportation to the theme parks is complimentary when staying on property.”

Do onsite guests get any perks at the theme parks and restaurants?

“Onsite guests get early park admission of 30 minutes each day and extended evening hours on select nights for deluxe resort guests,” said DeBlois. “Plus, on-site guests can make those hard-to-get character dining and restaurant reservations up to 60 days before their arrival and can purchase Lightning Lane pass up to seven days ahead.”

What are the different types of hotels?

Disney organizes its resort hotels into three categories: Deluxe, moderate and value.

Deluxe hotels

These include Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, Disney’s Contemporary Resort and more. They’re extravagant, heavily themed, luxurious and pricey. Many of them are close to one of the theme parks, and some are even on the monorail line.

Moderate hotels

These include Disney’s Port Orleans Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort and the Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. They’re a step down from the deluxe resorts in terms of pricing, but they still offer unique amenities, sit-down dining, themed pools and comfortable rooms.

Value hotels

These include Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century resort and more. As the budget-friendly resorts, they usually have less amenities, smaller rooms and food courts instead of restaurants. However, they’re very colorful, have fun pools for the kids and are a lot easier on the wallet. Some even have access to Skyliner transportation, which connects directly to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and International Gateway at Epcot.

Where should I stay on my next vacation?

“I would always recommend any resort that offers two modes of transportation to the parks, but my recommendations are also always tailored to who is traveling,” said DeBlois. “I love Disney’s Pop Century Resort as a value resort option. The Skyliner access is a great perk. It’s also connected to some other resorts, making it easy to visit there for dining and shopping. For deluxe resorts, I would recommend the Beach or Yacht Club, Disney’s Polynesian Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.”

The Best Time of Year to Go to Disney World

When planning Disney vacations, the first question that many people ask is, “What’s the best time of year to go to Disney World?” The answer is different for every family. Are you looking for lesser crowds? Cooler weather?

I am a former Disney cast member, and I used to live right in Disney World’s backyard. From my apartment, I could hear the Magic Kingdom fireworks. And like any local, I detested waiting on lines longer than 15 minutes. I have seen every season at Walt Disney World, but which ones stand out?

I’ve found that the best time to go to Disney World boils down to if it’s your first visit, what you and your family want out of your vacation, what events are important to you and how much you are willing or able to spend.

January

January is an easy and breezy month in Walt Disney World. There are still a few Christmas decorations left over, but who can complain about tinsel? Once the New Year’s Eve crowd filters out after beginning of the month, the parks are much more manageable. Take this opportunity to get on Avatar Flight of Passage in Animal Kingdom. Just remember to wear layers! The temperatures are wonky this month.

February

The beginning of February is mild in terms of crowds (and weather). In the middle of the month you’ll see a bump in crowds, because many schools in the Northeast take a week off of school for February break.

March

March is a month of moderate crowds. The sun is coming out again, and it’s the best weather Florida has to offer, but the end of March is when spring breakers start to arrive. Epcot’s Flower and Garden festival begins this month.

April

Beware spring break. The parks will be full of families and college kids alike, trying to enjoy the season. I would avoid any holidays at the park, including Easter, if you could. The crowds are just too difficult to navigate.

May

Other than Memorial Day weekend, which is notorious for heavy crowds, May is a more moderate month. The weather is getting a little hotter, but it’s bearable.

June

Moderate to heavy crowds, and hot, hot weather. To make the most out of your June vacation, go to the parks in the mornings and evenings. Use the afternoon for a swim in the pool or a well-deserved siesta.

disney

July

The Fourth of July Fireworks in the Magic Kingdom are incredible, but that means that the park is jam-packed with people trying to see them. Folks camp out in front of Cinderella Castle as soon as the park opens just to get a good view. It’s a hot and crowded month.

August

The crowds in this month go from heavy to moderate, because August is perhaps the hottest month in Disney World. Be prepared to actually watch the Country Bear Jamboree for the sake of some air conditioning. The humidity and heat make it very uncomfortable, so even though the crowd level is going down, it might not be worth it.

September

Even though it’s still hot, September is a more peaceful month. The majority of children have gone back to school, and the parks empty out. The Food and Wine Festival at Epcot is usually going on at this time and is not to be missed. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party also starts in late August and picks up in September. It’s a great night for the whole family. Frequent rains come and go during this season, so remember to bring a poncho.

October

October is perhaps the best time of year to go to Disney World. The crowds are moderate, but the weather is gorgeous. The Food and Wine Festival is still going on all throughout this month, and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is hitting its stride. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary is a popular party, where guests of all ages can arrive in costume and trick-or-treat around the park. You can meet rare characters, get on rides with no wait time and even see the Sanderson sisters from “Hocus Pocus.” If you can go any time of the year, early to mid-October are some of the best weeks to go to Disney World. It’s a sweet spot. Just remember to get your Not-So-Scary tickets early!

November

Early to mid-November has pretty low crowd levels, and the weather is very mild. Many rides become walk-ons during this time. Thanksgiving week and the weekend after are very crowded, however, because most people get off for work and school at that time. This is a good month to sneak in some early Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas parties.

December

This month is complicated. Very early December sees moderate crowds, and the rest of the month slowly builds and builds. The pressure comes to a head during the last two weeks of December – Christmas and New Year’s Eve are the busiest times at Disney ever. The parks can be fun at Christmastime. That’s true. The decorations are beautiful. The festivities are beyond compare. But it’s difficult to enjoy when you have less wiggle room than a sardine. If you must go during December, go early in the month.

What Does It Mean To Be a Disney Imagineer?

The word “Imagineer” gets thrown around a lot when talking about the Disney parks, but often people don’t know what it actually means. The fanciful name Disney Imagineer makes the job seem mysterious, almost like saying you’re an alchemist or a wizard. In fact, there are over 140 different job titles that fall under the umbrella of being a Disney Imagineer.

Mainly, it means someone who works for Walt Disney Imagineering Research Development, Inc. These are the people who research and develop ideas for the Walt Disney Company. They’re in charge of dreaming, designing and building Disney theme parks, attractions, cruise ships, resorts etc. Basically, they’re about live entertainment. They’re not really involved in the creation of films or television. They create things you can see and touch and smell, experiences that you can walk right into.

If at a Disney park a rollercoaster has ever taken your breath away, if you’ve ever spotted a hidden Mickey, if you’ve ever noticed a tiny, delightful detail amongst pirates and princesses, you have a Disney Imagineer to thank.

Originally, Walt Disney Imagineering was called Walt Disney Inc. The company later changed its name to WED Enterprises, for Walter Elias Disney himself. As a name, WED Enterprises didn’t last that long. Customers kept looking them up in the phone book and calling them for help planning their weddings. After a succession of irate and disappointed brides and grooms, WED Enterprises finally changed its name to Walt Disney Imagineering, dubbing its employees Imagineers.

What It Means To Be a Disney Imagineer

Being a Disney Imagineer doesn’t necessarily mean being an engineer, though that is where the Imagineers got their name (and there certainly are a number of extremely skilled engineers in the company). Imagineers can be architects, writers, interior designers, illustrators, concept artists, landscapers, archivists, costume designers, theatre technicians, special effects experts, graphic designers and more. With over 140 different job titles, there’s bound to be some diversity in talents and specialties.

Imagineers work mostly at a campus in Southern California, but they are often deployed to projects in different parts of the world like readying the park in Hong Kong Disneyland for new expansions. A small army of Imagineers in Orlando helped to bring Pandora to life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and worked in Florida’s Hollywood Studios, overseeing the construction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land.

Telling Stories the Disney Way

The Disney Imagineers are, above all else, storytellers. Imagineering is a form of storytelling, of putting on a show. That’s why Disney theme parks use theatre language all the time, like “good show” (immersive storytelling), “bad show” (the intrusion of reality), “onstage” (places the guests can see), “backstage” (places the guests cannot see), “cast member” (employee) and “costume” (uniform). This ideology is why Disney roller coasters almost never have exposed tracks or beams (bad show).

Disney Imagineers are the rock stars of the theme park world. Since 1952, they’ve designed twelve theme parks, two water parks, four cruise ships, shopping centers, around fifty resort hotels, a planned community and the ABC Times Square studios. They were also instrumental in the 2009 redesign of Disney Stores across the country. You know, among other projects.

What the Disney Imagineers are best known for is perhaps their development of audio animatronic technology, which Walt Disney was fascinated with himself. To compare and contrast, Mr. Lincoln, one of the first humanoid audio animatronics, can sit up, sit down, and deliver the Gettysburg address. The massive Na’vi Shaman of Songs on Pandora’s River Journey attraction, however, can sway along with the music, fully articulate her face, gracefully wave her arms and independently move each and every one of her fingers. She looks like a living, breathing creature. The sheer innovation is all part of that signature Disney magic.

The Grown-up’s Guide to Disney World Dining

Anyone who’s been to Walt Disney World knows there’s way more than rides, parades and Mickey Mouse meet-and-greets. Perhaps most notable are the incredible dining options all over the resort, both in the parks and at the on-property hotels. As expected, almost all Disney dining experiences are kid-friendly, but many restaurants offer fine dining with unique menus ideal for date nights or adults-only outings.

Here are a few of the best restaurants in Disney World for adults.

Save on Walt Disney World park tickets with AAA Tickets

Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge

You could easily walk past the Brown Derby in Hollywood Studios and not even realize it. This replica of the old Hollywood restaurant is generally reservation-only, but the lounge offers walk-up service and is an excellent place to sit and relax while the more ambitious members of your party wait an hour or more in line for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance rides.

The lounge serves the restaurant’s classic cobb salad, which lives up to the hype, and classic cocktails, including the grapefruit cake martini, a Brown Derby original invented in the 1940s.

California Grill

On the top floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, California Grill has the most romantic setting possible, with huge windows overlooking Magic Kingdom. Disney pros know that the best time to book a reservation at this AAA Three Diamond-Designated restaurant is during the park’s fireworks, when they lower the lights and pipe in the show music from the park.

Menu favorites include California Grill sushi and fresh Florida fish.

disney world dining monsieur paul

Monsieur Paul

There are many excellent dining options at Epcot – simply strolling and snacking around the World Showcase is an extremely pleasant way to spend an evening – but Monsieur Paul is something special.

Perched above the more casual Chefs de France bistro in the France pavilion, this restaurant was opened in 1982 by the beloved and influential chef Paul Bocuse, who had a three-Michelin star restaurant in Lyon, France, for five decades.

Monsieur Paul is the closest you can get to Paris in Florida – maybe even the whole country. Devoted to the French art of eating and drinking, the five-course gastronomic meal includes two cocktails, an hors d’oeuvre, fish course, palate cleanser of sorbet and brandy, meat course, cheese course and dessert.

Be prepared to take your time (the restaurant has a great view of the Epcot nighttime show), and soak in every moment of the $195-per-person experience.

Toledo – Tapas, Steak and Seafood

On the rooftop of the Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Toledo serves Spanish-inspired fine dining. The interior is one enormous, gorgeous art installation, but there’s also an outdoor dining area with views of the resort.

Start your date night at this AAA Three Diamond-Designated restaurant with the flight of four pinxtos (small bites), then try the Rioja-braised chicken with roasted tomato bomba rice or the chuleton bone-in ribeye for two.

Tony’s Town Square Restaurant

Blink and you’ll miss this “Lady and the Tramp”-themed restaurant in Magic Kingdom. While definitely kid-friendly, there’s a serenity here you won’t find anywhere else in the park.

Tony’s is one of the few places in Magic Kingdom that serves alcohol, and it has a private porch where you can sit and sip wine while the parades pass by on Main Street. Don’t skip the garlic bread for the table, which comes with roasted garlic butter and Parmesan fonduta.

Topolino’s Terrace

A favorite for breakfast character dining, which is fun for the whole family, Topolino’s Terrace is all fine dining at night. And its location on the top floor of Disney’s Riviera Resort provides a perfect vantage point for the nighttime shows at Epcot and Hollywood Studios.

Topolino’s serves a Riviera-inspired menu of French and Italian cuisine. Its take on escargot, served with buttery French gougeres, is a winner even for people who aren’t fans of snails. Handmade pastas like the lobster linguine with sauce Americaine and squid ink tuille are unforgettable, as is the filet mignon with Bordelaise sauce, broccolini and shallot vinaigrette.

Reservations are hard to come by, but it’s usually easy to snag a seat at the bar, which has full dinner service.

Victoria and Albert’s

Located within Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the Dining Room at Victoria and Albert’s is the ultimate Disney World dining experience. It also happens to be the most expensive restaurant on property. The prix fixe dinner starts at $295 per person for seven courses or $375 for 10 courses, with optional wine (+$150) and zero-proof (+$110) beverage pairings.

However, a truly remarkable, AAA Five Diamond-designated experience comes with the price tag. The courses are nothing short of gastronomic wizardry. There’s even a water sommelier to ensure you’ve got the optimal water pairing with each course.

Wine Bar George

This Disney Springs restaurant is a wine-lover’s paradise. Owned by master sommelier George Miliotes, Wine Bar George pours more than 140 wines by the glass and ounce. So, if you’re looking for something special, they can recommend great pairings, but you also have the option to taste a lot of different wines without having to commit to a big price tag.

Everything on the menu is excellent, but standouts include the saganaki appetizer (Greek cheese torched tableside), and the skirt steak for two, served with roasted potatoes, grilled bok choy, mushrooms and a generous garnish of chimichurri on top.

Wine Bar George also serves a killer brunch and a house-infused espresso martini that’s easily the best at Walt Disney World.

Pump Prices Across the Northeast Stay Put Ahead of July Fourth Holiday

As crude oil price hikes stemming from Middle East tensions mostly evaporated, commodities traders shifted focus to domestic supply and demand readings, which show supplies remain strong amid increasing demand for gas.

Last week brought a third straight weekly increase in gasoline demand, which rose nearly 400,000 barrels a day over the prior week, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). This is in line with expectations for strong demand typically seen in early summer.

That higher demand was a factor in national inventories of gasoline declining by 2.1 million barrels in total, according to the EIA, which might put additional upward pressure on pump prices. But in the Northeast, regional inventories increased by just over 2 million barrels, bucking the national trend. Regional supplies were up 3.2 million barrels over last year and comfortably positioned ahead of the July Fourth holiday and the next few peak weeks of the summer driving season.

“Recent geopolitical events showcased the volatile nature of oil and gas markets, but right now supply and demand are the primary factors impacting how much it costs to fill our tanks,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “While regional pump prices are up slightly from a month ago, they remain more than 35 cents lower per gallon than this time last year — great news for those who took July Fourth road trips.”

AAA Northeast’s June 30 survey of fuel prices found the national average down 4 cents from last week ($3.22), averaging $3.18 per gallon. Today’s national average price was 2 cents higher than a month ago ($3.16) and 31 cents lower than this day last year ($3.49).

Region Current Price* One Week Ago One Month Ago One Year Ago
Connecticut $3.17 $3.17 $3.10 $3.56
Massachusetts $3.07 $3.08 $3 $3.46
New York $3.21 $3.20 $3.12 $3.58
Rhode Island $3.06 $3.07 $2.99 $3.43

*Prices as of June 30, 2025

As of June 30, Mississippi and Oklahoma had the lowest prices in the nation at $2.71 and $2.73, respectively. California and Hawaii held the highest prices in the nation at $4.59 and $4.47, respectively.

Stop Driving in Flip-Flops

If you’re headed to the beach, driving in flip-flops or other backless sandals might be convenient, but the summer outfit staples can be a safety hazard.

Is driving in flip-flops illegal? No. But unsecured footwear may be responsible for more car crashes than we think, according to a British survey. About one-third of respondents admitted to driving in flip-flops and almost as many reported having a problem while driving in them.

Why to Stop Driving in Flip-Flops

“The big issue is possible limited pedal control,” said John Paul, AAA Northeast’s Car Doctor and senior manager for traffic safety. “Flip-flops don’t fit as well as shoes and can either fall off or get caught under the pedals or even floor mats. This can also cause some delay in hitting the brake in an emergency due to the loose fit. Also, if the flip-flops are wider, as many are, it is possible to hit the brake and accelerator at the same time.”

Simulator studies have indicated that drivers wearing flip-flops take twice the amount of time to move their foot from the gas pedal to the brake.

And just because it is legal doesn’t mean it is a good idea. If driving in sandals contributes to a crash, the choice of footwear won’t be an excuse it will be evidence of a bad decision.

In one instance, a Massachusetts woman who drove her car over a curb in a parking lot and onto two parked cars told police she lost control of the vehicle when her flip-flop got caught in the pedals. She was charged with negligent operation.

Best Footwear for Driving

Most states encourage drivers to wear “appropriate” footwear, as in something that will not interfere with the ability to use the pedals. This not only includes flip-flops, but shoes with clunky bottoms or very high heels.

It’s best for drivers to get into that mindset early. AAA Driving School requires students to wear appropriate footwear during in-car lessons. The class guidelines explain that “bare feet, sandals or flip-flops are not acceptable, and the instructor may reserve the right to cancel the lesson if they determine the student is not wearing safe footwear.”

So what footwear is best for driving? “Comfortable, secure fitting shoes with a flat sole are best for applying even pressure when braking or accelerating,” said Brian Butterworth, AAA Northeast’s senior manager for driver training. Fully enclosed shoes with a large toe box are ideal because they are more stable, and your heel should be able to touch the car floor. Good ankle support and thin soles are critical, so drivers can judge how much pressure to apply on the pedals. Flats, loafers and sneakers are good choices.

And it’s a good idea to always keep a pair of driving shoes in the car to change into after you leave the beach.

AAA Launches National Effort to Bring Millions of Meals to Local Communities

Partnership with Feeding America® aims to provide meals at a time when summer break can bring food insecurity for children

AAA today launched its nationwide grassroots food donation campaign, aiming to provide at least 3.5 million meals to people in need; this is coming at a time when the latest federal data reports that food insecurity has reached its highest point in over a decade.

AAA selected the week of June 23-27 to focus on donation and volunteer efforts because when many children are out of school, they lose access to school-sponsored breakfasts and lunches and often experience food insecurity. In 2023 alone, 13.8 million children did not have the food they needed to thrive, and 47 million people total — approximately 1 in 7 — experienced food insecurity in the United States.

“One of AAA Northeast’s core values is to help and serve as a way of life, and this campaign is a natural extension of how we show up for our members and our broader communities,” said John Galvin, President and CEO, AAA Northeast. “By joining forces with AAA clubs across the country to fill food pantries, kitchens and plates, our goal is to make as big an impact as possible — here in the Northeast and beyond.”

AAA joins the Feeding America network, which helps tens of millions of people experiencing food insecurity gain access to the food and resources they need to thrive. Within AAA’s expansive reach, which includes thousands of dedicated associates and millions of valued members, AAA aims to raise awareness, generate donations, volunteer time and engage local communities to build a hunger-free America.

“Hunger is a challenge we can overcome by working together,” said Lauren Biedron, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at Feeding America. “We are excited to join hands with AAA who understand the urgent need to address the hunger crisis and share in our belief that food insecurity is about more than food. It’s about ensuring everyone has access to the resources needed to thrive.”

Throughout June, food donation boxes are available in all 65 branches and administrative offices across the AAA Northeast territory. Employees will volunteer with members at various events, including collecting donations curbside at grocery stores, preparing food for those in need and stocking shelves at pantries. Learn more about how you can join AAA in supporting our neighbors in need and helping end hunger: Help Fight Hunger With AAA. To make a donation directly to Feeding America, visit AAA Northeast’s page on the Feeding America website.

Pump Prices Across the Northeast Jump Amid Geopolitical Conflict, Increased Demand

Northeast pump prices surged in response to escalating conflict in the Middle East and steady demand for gasoline as the summer driving season shifts into high gear.

Since the first week of June, oil prices have risen more than $10 a barrel and hovered between $74 and $78 a barrel on June 23 — a price level last seen in January. The increase stems in large part from the fighting that broke out between Israel and Iran on June 13, which intensified over the weekend with the United States launching airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

As oil and gas markets weighed the potential for continued conflict or for Iran to follow through on threats to block oil shipments in the region, oil and gas prices faced additional upward pressure on tightening inventories and robust demand figures reported last week by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Inventories of both oil and gasoline fell last week, according to the EIA, with oil stocks falling by a sizable 12 million barrels to 420.9 million barrels as refiners produced more gasoline and diesel and more oil was exported. In the Northeast, gasoline supplies shrank by 700,000 barrels to 58.7 million barrels, which is still above 56.1 million barrels in storage last year but below the 62-million-barrel five-year average.

Demand for gasoline reached 9.29 million barrels a day last week — a figure in line with expectations for this time of year and an increase over the prior week’s 9.17 million barrels a day, according to the EIA. After lackluster demand readings all spring, markets reacted to the stronger numbers in recent weeks with optimism, sending wholesale gasoline prices higher.

“It should come as no surprise to see prices at the pump spike after an escalating geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, but it’s not the only factor driving recent price increases,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “Prices were already poised to climb on stronger summer demand and seasonal expectations.”

AAA Northeast’s June 23 survey of fuel prices found the national average up 8 cents from last week ($3.14), averaging $3.22 per gallon. The June 23 national average price was 3 cents higher than a month ago ($3.19) and 22 cents lower than this day last year ($3.44).

RegionCurrent Price*One Week AgoOne Month AgoOne Year Ago

Record 72.2 Million Americans Expected to Travel Domestically Fourth of July Week

AAA projects 72.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Independence Day holiday period from Saturday, June 28, to Sunday, July 6. This year’s domestic travel forecast is an increase of 1.7 million travelers compared to last year and 7 million more than in 2019.

“Summertime is one of the busiest travel seasons, and July Fourth falling on a Friday creates a long weekend that many are taking advantage of,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “Following Memorial Day’s record forecast, AAA is seeing strong demand for road trips and air travel over Independence Day week.”

By Car

AAA projects a record 61.6 million people will travel by car, 1.3 million more road travelers and a 2.2% increase compared to last year.

Last July Fourth week, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 emergency roadside assistance calls for issues like dead batteries and flat tires. AAA recommends getting routine vehicle maintenance ahead of your trip and packing an emergency kit. Especially over the busy holiday weekend, AAA urges drivers to watch for stopped vehicles and Slow Down, Move Over for emergency responders.

For travelers renting cars, AAA car rental partner Hertz says Thursday, July 3, is expected to be the busiest day to pick up vehicles. MA ONLY: Boston is among Hertz’s top destinations based on advanced bookings.

By Air

The number of people traveling by air is also projected to set a record. AAA expects 5.84 million travelers will fly to their destinations, a 1.4% increase over the previous record set last year.

Round-trip domestic flights cost 4% more than last year, according to AAA data on what travelers paid when they booked their July Fourth trips. When booking last-minute flights for summer trips, consider flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday for the best deals.

By Other Modes

AAA projects 4.78 million people will travel by bus, train or cruise, a 7.4% increase from last year. Cruising is leading this category, particularly at this time of year, when Alaska cruise season is in full swing.

AAA’s Top Independence Day Destinations

The top holiday destinations listed below are based on AAA booking data for the Independence Day travel period. Cruises, beaches and fireworks are the main motivators for travelers heading to these cities. Alaska cruises are in peak season, Florida and Hawaii are in high demand for their resorts and attractions, and New York and Boston host two of the most popular fireworks shows in the nation.

Are License Plate Covers Illegal?

Ghost plates, like smoked license plate covers and other license plate hiders, are putting a scare into public officials —  not because they’re haunted, but because they help drivers evade tolls and tickets, costing cities and states millions of dollars.

Some of the modified license plates belong to stolen or uninsured cars, while others are altered to prevent cameras from capturing an accurate photo at tolls. Some drivers use license plate flippers, which are devices that flip up to cover the plate as the car reaches a toll.

“Drivers using ghost plates are typically trying to avoid paying tolls or getting caught by red light and speed cameras,” said Alec Slatky, managing director of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast.  “Sometimes people are even trying to commit insurance fraud or attempting to register in a different state so they can avoid accountability in the state where they actually live.”

Evading tolls hurts states and cities that rely on the revenue. In New York City, about 5% of the cars passing through tolls have ghost plates, costing the Big Apple as much as $200 million annually, according to Gothamist. Money collected from tolls often is used to maintain and improve bridges and roads.

Are Ghost Plates Illegal?

Ghost plates have existed for years, but with cashless toll collections and, more recently, congestion pricing in New York City, the demand for ghost plates has shot up as more people seek to evade paying.

The online market for kits to disguise license plates exploded, to the point that New York State made it illegal to use or distribute materials for modifying license plates.

In September 2024, New York City Mayor Eric Adams launched a ghost car crackdown, aimed at getting untraceable cars with illegal license plate covers off the streets. Almost 300 cars were removed in the first five days.

Ghost-Busting Efforts

With more tolls come more scofflaws, but also more enforcement.

Blocking your license plate is illegal in almost every state. New York, Tennessee, Washington and Pennsylvania have laws banning the use of plate flippers, with fines that could cost violators thousands of dollars.

Cities have also been stepping up efforts to catch toll evaders. In 2024, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued more than 7,000 summonses for toll evasion, a 27% percent increase from 2023 and collected almost $18 million in unpaid tolls and related fees.

“Everyone should have to play by the same rules on the road,” Slatky said. “So, when someone tries to skirt those rules, there should be consequences for that behavior.”

Good Debt vs. Bad Debt

Whether you’re buying a house or car, going to college or simply charging expenses to your credit card, being in debt is one thing just about everyone can relate to.

Total household debt in the United States surpassed $18.20 trillion in June 2025, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The average household accumulates nearly $105,056 in debt, including mortgage loans, credit cards and student loans.

But not all debt is created equal. In fact, some types of debt can be viewed as investments that will benefit your long-term financial outlook. Other forms of debt, however, can be dangerously problematic. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of good and bad debt.

What Is Good Debt?

While there is no hard and fast definition of good debt, it is generally considered to be any debt that helps you increase your income or net worth. Furthermore, most examples of good debt also fall under the category of installment debt, in which the borrower is forced to pay the debt down in fixed amounts over a defined period of time, greatly reducing the risk of financial disaster.

Student Loans

The cost of college tuition has skyrocketed over the years, meaning nearly all students wanting to get an advanced degree will have to go into debt by taking out student loans. But there is a direct relationship between education level and both median income and unemployment rate. Therefore, student loans can be viewed as an investment in your future, increasing the likelihood that you land a well-paying job.

Another advantage of student loans is that they generally have lower interest rates, particularly if they are federal loans. This makes them easier to pay off.

Better Funding for a Brighter Future

Fund your higher education with flexible and affordable student loans from AAA.

Mortgages

There may be no better type of debt to own than a mortgage. Unlike many other purchases and expenses, housing is a necessity. If you choose to rent, you’ll be paying money that you’ll never recoup. The beauty of buying a house, however, is that it forces you to save money. Each monthly mortgage payment you make increases the amount of equity you own in your house. Once your mortgage is paid off, the full value of your home belongs to you.

Not only do you then own a very valuable asset (thus increasing your net worth), real estate values usually increase each year, meaning you’re making money without even doing anything. If you choose to sell your house down the road, you’ll likely be making a profit.

In the market for a new home? Learn more about low-rate mortgages through AAA.

Home Equity Loans

The value of your home will increase over time even if the property is left alone. A few home improvements projects will bump that number up even more. This is where home equity loans come into play. If you need to borrow money to complete these projects, and the increase in home value is greater than the total cost of the loan, you can file that home equity loan under good debt.

Home equity loans can often come with low interest rates and the interest you do pay on them may be tax deductible.

Car Loans

Car loans tend to straddle the line between good and bad debt, as car ownership, from a financial aspect, has both pros and cons. Opposed to homes, which gain value over time, new cars lose value from the minute you drive one off the lot.

That being said, cars are a necessity for most people, needed to, amongst other things, get them to work where they can earn a living. In order to make a car loan as “good” as possible, find one with favorable terms, including a low interest rate.

AAA can get you get behind the wheel of a new car or refinance the one you already have. Learn more about our Auto Buying Program and low-rate Auto Loans.

What Is Bad Debt?

Bad debt not only puts you in the hole for your immediate future, it also offers no redeeming qualities, such as increasing your income or net worth. Furthermore, it can often cause your debt totals to spiral out of control. Here are some types of bad debt to look out for.

Credit Card

What mortgages are to good debt, credit cards are to bad debt. Credit card debt doesn’t help your long-term financial outlook and, even worse, it can cause your debt totals to spiral out of control. Credit card debt is the prime example of what’s known as revolving debt, in which there is no predefined repayment plan and minimum payments change as you pay off your debt or add to it.

Credit cards offer an easy way to pay for things, but consumers pay for that convenience in the form of extremely high interest rates. This means that even a small amount of debt can grow to a significant amount in a short period of time. This significantly increases the total amount of debt you owe and makes getting even on your debt all that more difficult.

Tips for building and maintaining healthy credit card habits. Listen to Episode 19 of our podcast, Merging Into Life: Opening a Credit Card.

Tune In
High-Interest Loans

Piggybacking off credit card debt, any loan with a high-interest rate can be labeled as bad debt and should be avoided. It can be very difficult to catch up with your payments if you fall behind on these types of loans, putting you in a worse financial position than you began. A prime example of this is payday loans, which provide short-term cash you’re required to repay by your next paycheck, usually within a week or two. However, payday loans can have interests rates as high as 600%. If you’re late on your repayment, it’s a very slippery slope into a massive hole of debt.

AAA Analysis Finds Morning Flights Significantly Less Likely to be Delayed, Canceled

Summer flights represent an outsize percentage of cancellations

The bags are packed, the car is parked, and you’ve made it through the security lines. But is your flight taking off on time? During the busy summer travel season, the earlier the flight, the better chance the answer to that question will be yes.

Summer flights bring an increased risk of delays and cancellations compared to the rest of the year. Across the country, from June to August 2024, 72% of flights departed on time, compared to 80% throughout the rest of 2024, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. And while June through August flights made up just over a quarter of 2024’s total flights, they accounted for 33% of all delays and 40% of all cancellations.

Early flights are more likely to depart as scheduled. Across the country last year, flights from June through August in the 6 a.m. hour had just a 1-in-9 chance of being delayed or canceled. By the 10 a.m. hour, those odds jump to 1-in-5; by 3 p.m., flights had a whopping 1-in-3 chance of being delayed or canceled. The odds of delay or cancellation only increase into the evening hours.

“Any travelers concerned about the potential for delays and cancellations are best served by choosing flights earlier in the day, which are most likely to take off on time,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “Travelers should prepare by signing up for text alerts and downloading apps for the airline they’ve booked and an alternative airline, as that can be the quickest way to rebook if needed.”

State-specific airport data:

Connecticut: At Bradley International Airport, 80% of flights took off on time in 2024. In June, July and August, that average dropped to just under 73%. And in 2024, flights during those three months accounted for almost half of cancellations for the entire year.

Massachusetts: At Boston Logan International Airport, 79% of flights took off on time in 2024. In June, July and August, that average dropped to approximately 72%. And in 2024, flights during those three months accounted for over half of cancellations for the entire year.

During the 2024 summer travel season, roughly 85% of flights between 6 and 9 a.m. took off on schedule at Logan, compared to approximately 53% of flights between 6 and 9 p.m.

At Worcester’s Regional Airport, 75% of flights took off on time in 2024. In June, July and August, that average dropped to just under 69%. And in 2024, flights during those three months accounted for over 40% of cancellations for the entire year.

New Jersey: At Newark Liberty International Airport, approximately 76% of flights departed on time in 2024. In June, July and August, that average dropped to 68%. And flights during those three months accounted for over 53% of cancellations for the entire year.

During the 2024 summer travel season, roughly 83% of flights between 6 and 9 a.m. took off on schedule, compared to less than 50% of flights between 6 and 9 p.m.

New York: Across New York City area airports, delays and cancellations increase in the summer, with most delays occurring later in the day compared to early morning. Flights in June, July, and August accounted for an outsize portion of cancellations for the entire year: nearly 65% at JFK, over 60% at LaGuardia, 53% at Newark, 57% at Stewart, 39% at Westchester and 38% at MacArthur.

Q&A With AAA Northeast’s Car Doctor: June 2025

Q. I was reading an article online about the start stop feature cars use today to save on gas. This mechanic says it is the worst thing invented. Says everyone should disable this feature because it ruins your engine. Stating, starting an engine that many times shortens the life of the engine. Is there any real data about this feature? I really do not care for the feature myself but would like to know if it does save on gas and help the environment without shorting the life of the engine.

A. The starters are supposed to be more robust, if fact Toyota has a code for starter replacements and it is in the hundreds of thousands of starts. Chrysler and Hyundai both also claim the starting components are designed for repetitive start/stops. With today’s computer-controlled fuel injected engines there is very little chance of oil dilution, so I do not see this feature ruining an engine. Does it save on gas, yes it does, a little. About 11 years ago we did this study and found the tech does save fuel and lowers vehicle emissions. https://newsroom.aaa.com/2014/07/aaas-tests-reveal-real-world-benefits-automatic-stop-start-technology/. Is it my favorite new car feature, no. In fact the EPA is considering a ban on auto start/stop technology in new cars.

A. The idea that the filter improved the mileage is interesting, since technically the computer system should keep the fuel mixture the same-a clogged filter will reduce power which you need to add more throttle and end up using more fuel. Personally, I still look at the air filter and if it is dirty or dusty or pollen filled, I replace it. This is probably every 18 months of so. I try, when possible, to use factory filters or if not tend to use WIX filters which are made by Mann-Hummel. They also make many of the OE filters. Is Fram a good company I am sure, but I had a weird issue with a Fram oil filter on one car. I would get a lifter tap sound in the morning when I switched to the OE filter no tap. Since then, I have used WIX or the factory filter.

Q. My brand-new Kia K4 just turned 1500 miles and has an 8-speed automatic transmission with Normal setting and a Sport setting. I just went on a trip driving in a normal setting. On the highway at 70 MPH the tachometer is reading 2300 RPM’s. I discovered the car is in 7th gear. I can manually paddle shift to 8th gear and the RPM’s drop to 1600. On my trip there I did this all the time and got 45 MPG. On the way home I did not touch the paddles and got 38 MPG. Any thoughts?

A. This does sound a little strange. I can understand that in the sport setting, the computer will lock out 8th gear for better performance. In the normal setting they transmission should go into 8th speed at highway speeds. I would go back to the dealer and road test another K4 for comparison. Having an 8-speed transmission that does not shift into 8th gear automatically does not make much sense to me.

Q. I was watching YouTube and saw a mechanic checking for parasitic electrical drain with a thermal imaging camera. Does this work and have you tried it?

A. I recently have been using an Innova Infrared Inspection Camera. I did find a relay that stayed on when the car was off because of the heat signature. Although it is a versatile tool, it is not the quick answer to finding parasitic draw, it is just another tool for diagnostics and troubleshooting that can get you down the correct path. I think we watch the same channels.

Love and Life Insurance

Getting married is one of life’s biggest milestones and, consequently, is something that necessitates a lot of important conversations. While choosing your wedding florist is undoubtedly important, we mean something more to the tune of discussing your financial future. In essence, life insurance.

No one wants to imagine the possibility of losing someone they love, but planning for the unexpected is an act of love that can protect both of you for the future.

The Importance of Life Insurance in Marriage

Life insurance isn’t just a policy, much like how your marriage license is more than just a piece of paper. Both are essentially a promise in good faith.

Whether it’s covering debts, protecting your partner’s standard of living or ensuring that your children or future dependents are taken care of, life insurance plays a vital role in providing peace of mind. In the event of an untimely passing, having life insurance can ease the financial burden that might otherwise fall on you or your partner. It can make sure they’re not left to manage things like funeral costs, mortgages, student loans or other financial obligations.

Discussing Life Insurance With Your Partner

Before you even consider the specifics of a policy, it’s important to sit down and have an honest conversation about life insurance with your partner. Although it will likely feel uncomfortable or emotional, it’s crucial to approach the discussion from a place of care and responsibility.

Start Early

Don’t wait until you have children or until your financial situation becomes more complex before you start talking about life insurance. The earlier you start, the more options you’ll have and the easier it’ll be to secure affordable coverage. Starting early means locking in lower premiums and giving yourselves time to adjust coverage as your needs evolve.

Be Transparent

Make sure you discuss your financial goals, debts and income. This will give both of you a clearer picture of how much life insurance you’ll need. Whether you’re paying back student loans, a mortgage or are considering family planning, being clear about your financial obligations will ensure your policy covers all the necessary expenses.

Talk About Your Needs

There are various types of life insurance, such as term life, whole life and universal life, each with different benefits. Make sure you understand the differences and discuss which type of coverage fits your lifestyle and goals.

Consider Each Other’s Opinions

It’s always important to listen to your partner’s concerns and desires, and especially when it comes to life insurance. It’s a shared responsibility and understanding what matters most to each other will help in choosing the right coverage and beneficiary designations.

How to Provide a Financially Secure Start to Your Marriage

Happy finances, happy life? We say so! By setting yourself and your partner up for success early on, you can focus on your future together without being burdened by financial stress.

To start, establish a clear and realistic budget before making any big financial decisions. Determine how much you each earn, what your regular expenses are and where you can save. This can help you both feel aligned on your financial goals and prevent future misunderstandings.

If either or both partners come into the marriage with debt — credit card, student loans, car loans, etc. — it’s important to address it head-on. Consider taking out life insurance to cover any large debts that would otherwise fall to your partner in the event of your passing.

Life insurance isn’t the most romantic topic to discuss, but it is one of the most practical ways to ensure your loved one’s well-being in the event of the unexpected. By encouraging open conversations and planning for a secure future together, you can start your happily ever after worry-free.
