Northeast Pump Prices Jump Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

The increase in prices comes even after demand for gasoline last week was lower than the comparable week in 2024, settling at 8.79 million barrels a day, according to data from the Energy Information Administration. That’s an increase of a scant 77,000 barrels a day over the prior week, and the second straight week that demand has been below 9 million barrels a day — a benchmark that demand typically exceeds in the warmer months.

As demand ticked upward, gasoline inventories declined across most of the United States — including the Northeast where supplies fell to 58.2 million barrels. That’s still above last year’s figure of 55.5 million barrels, and one of the key factors keeping pump prices in our region more than 50 cents cheaper than this time last year.

Petroleum market prices were buoyed last week on reports that the United States and China had agreed to a 90-day reduction on some tariffs. By the close of markets on Friday, oil prices settled about $5 higher than the recent low of about $57 a barrel during the first week of May. Markets last week also responded to the U.S. Department of Labor’s report that inflation for April was 2.3% — the lowest monthly inflation reading since February 2021.

“Even with prices edging higher ahead of the holiday, Americans will encounter noticeably cheaper gasoline compared to this time last year as they take to the road this Memorial Day in record numbers,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast.

AAA Northeast’s May 19 survey of fuel prices found the current national average up 4 cents from last week ($3.13), averaging $3.17 per gallon. The May 19 national average price was 2 cents higher than a month ago ($3.15) and 42 cents lower than this day last year ($3.59).

Region Current Price* One Week Ago One Month Ago One Year Ago
Connecticut $3.10 $3.06 $3.04 $3.68
Massachusetts $2.99 $2.96 $2.95 $3.55
New Jersey $2.99 $2.98 $2.97 $3.51
New York $3.12 $3.09 $3.09 $3.69
Rhode Island $3 $2.95 $2.94 $3.57

*Prices as of May 19, 2025

As of May 19, Mississippi and Tennessee had the lowest prices in the nation, at $2.66 and $2.72, respectively. California and Hawaii held the highest prices in the nation at $4.91 and $4.48, respectively.

Road Trip to North Conway, N.H.

North Conway may have recently been crowned the best ski town in a 2024 USA Today poll, but this cozy village in northeast New Hampshire makes for a great road trip destination throughout the year. Long after the snow melts, visitors can enjoy majestic views of the White Mountains, unbeatable deals at North Conway outlet stores and adventurous outdoor fun.

Things to Do in North Conway

Scenic Drives

North Conway is surrounded by rugged terrain for hiking, but there are also less strenuous ways to enjoy the region’s sweeping vistas. The scenic Kancamagus Highway, also known as New Hampshire Route 112 or simply “the Kanc,” passes through the heart of the White Mountains and is a favorite road for leaf peepers in the fall. Stops along the highway offer opportunities for photos and information about the region’s history.

Train Rides

Train fans will enjoy the Conway Scenic Railroad, which offers two train tours to see the splendor of the White Mountains and experience the golden age of rail travel. The Mount Washington Cog Railway is a bit more vertical rail experience, climbing Mount Washington — the highest peak in the northeastern U.S. — and allowing passengers to ascend three climate zones in less than an hour. Seasonally, travelers can also take the Mount Washington Auto Road to the summit and earn the ubiquitous bumper sticker.

Outdoor Adventures

North Conway offers many outdoor adventures, both for trail runners and for strollers. The mountain-fed cascading falls of Diana’s Baths are stunning, and accessible by a relatively flat gravel path, but also offer opportunities for light bouldering. Nearby, Echo Lake State Park offers easy and moderate hiking paths, and is also a great place for a family picnic or swim in the summer.

Mountain bikers can enjoy some 1,200 miles of trails in the area, and there are local outfitters for renting a bike and gear needed for the bumpy rides. For tubing and kayaking, the nearby Saco River beckons, and North Conway’s Northern Extremes outfitters can provide rentals, while other area outfitters can provide rentals and tours, as well.

Outdoor and Indoor Family Fun

Younger outdoor enthusiasts might especially enjoy Mountain Adventure Park. This attraction was created by Cranmore Mountain Resort to offer attractions when the ski season is over. Here, families can enjoy a mountain coaster, a zipline and a giant swing in the warmer months. A short drive from North Conway lies the magical world of Story Land, a storybook theme park for little ones. Think of it as a starter theme park for small children who may find Six Flags a bit much.

Ski destination communities often have indoor attractions year-round. North Conway is home to Kahuna Laguna, New Hampshire’s largest indoor water park. This park offers 40,000 square feet of water slides, a lazy river and splashing fun for all ages. The M&D Playhouse hosts live theater and music year-round and stages a full slate of crowd-pleasing shows in the summer.

If you time it right, you can marvel at the intricate locomotive world created and maintained by the North Conway Model Railroad Club on the grounds of the Conway Scenic Railroad; this attraction is run by volunteers, so check the website for hours before visiting. History buffs may want to pop into the local branch of the New England Ski Museum in North Conway, which offers a glimpse into New England’s storied skiing history.

Shopping

The Granite State levies no sales tax, making it a popular destination for shoppers. North Conway outlet stores are a favorite for those seeking bargains on high-end name brands. Settlers Green and Settlers Crossing offer dozens of nationally known stores for hours of endless shopping opportunities.

Be sure to visit some of the quirkier, local shops dotting the village. A favorite for visitors is Zeb’s General Store, which welcomes visitors with old-time charm and a mouthwatering candy counter.

Dining

After a day of exploring, North Conway restaurants stand ready to feed hungry travelers. Muddy Moose Restaurant & Pub is a popular eatery with a large outdoor patio. For something more intimate, Peach’s Restaurant serves creative breakfasts and lunches in a homestyle setting. If you see a yellow flag outside a restaurant, it means the restaurant is a Valley Original, one of the region’s signature restaurants with a reputation for great food and service.

Although it is known as an unforgettable ski town, North Conway is like a new destination for visitors to explore with each passing season.

North Conway Hotels

Both lodgings are AAA Three Diamond designated and offer a comfortable basecamp central to the area’s activities, with many family-friendly amenities. While both have pools, Cambria Hotel North Conway also has a restaurant on site, while the Comfort Inn & Suites sits just steps away from a popular mini-golf course.

European Destination Dupes

budget wise

The concept of a dupe — a product with similar traits to a high-end or expensive item but sold at an affordable price — has so far been synonymous with clothing, makeup and even living room furniture. Now, dupes have entered the travel space.

If you’re on a budget, a European vacation may not be in the cards right now, or you may simply prefer to travel closer to home.

Fortunately, North America is full of places to visit that have the feeling of highly coveted destinations without massive price tags. Consider these destination dupes for your next getaway.

Instead of the French Countryside, Visit Quebec City, Canada

Known as the “Capital of New France,” it’s no wonder where Quebec City got its European charm. Indeed, up until 1763, Quebec was a French settlement and has since kept up the French ambiance with its beautiful centuries-old architecture, French-inspired cuisine and a French dialect that, to this day, is the primary language.

Don’t miss a visit to the Place Royale neighborhood, a quaint little village that was also featured in the film “Catch Me If You Can,” as well as Montmorency Falls and, of course, the iconic Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac hotel, which sits elegantly atop the hill at the city’s center. The Petit-Champlain district is also the perfect area to take a stroll reminiscent of shopping in France with decorated storefronts and plenty of cafes to rest at while enjoying an espresso and croissant.

Destination dupes--Virginia
Virginia winery vineyard in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Instead of Tuscany, Visit Virginia Wine Country

Although there are more than 4,000 miles between Virginia and Italy’s Tuscan region, the two places have a few unexpected things in common — mainly, breathtaking rolling hills against a rustic countryside backdrop dotted with vineyards. So, not so dissimilar after all.

Virginia’s wine country stretches across the Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachia, the Shenandoah Valley and beyond, garnering an enormous breadth of offerings. You don’t have to love wine to enjoy it, though. Anyone who appreciates slow living and unique agricultural experiences will be taken with the area’s rich history, exceptional food and stunning landscapes.

Find your way around using the state’s wine guide as a start. Or settle in one place that has it all, like The Farmhouse at Veritas in Afton for accommodations, dining and more.

Destination dupes, Leavenworth, WA
Leavenworth, Washington

Instead of Bavaria, Visit Leavenworth, Washington

Bavarian culture has found a home in Leavenworth, where the sights, sounds and flavors of Germany are front and center. Not only do the town’s buildings resemble those of a German village, but they operate accordingly, too.

The shops and restaurants in Leavenworth all have a semblance of Germanic culture, like The Hat Shop, where you can purchase hats (naturally), plus handcrafted wooden toys and souvenirs. When you’re ready for lunch, you’ll have your work cut out for you as you decide between 36 eateries — most of which serve authentic German classics like schnitzel, pretzels, bratwurst and more.

Visiting Leavenworth at any time of year will grant you a memorable stay. The spring and summer seasons are ideal for hiking the surrounding mountains, biking and horse-drawn carriage rides, while fall and winter are the time to experience Oktoberfest and see the village covered in snow and decorated for the holiday season.

Destination dupe Savannah
The iconic fountain at Forsyth Park in the heart of Savannah.

Instead of Barcelona, Visit Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is a tapestry of history and charm akin to the never boring and always vibrant Barcelona, Spain. After all, a city covered in Spanish moss and cobblestone streets is bound to emit such an analogous feeling.

Savannah’s old-world allure emanates from its architecture, which — while technically Victorian — signals a compelling resemblance to Barcelona with bright colors, elaborate designs and total grandeur. Like Barcelona’s urban design, Savannah’s historic district is organized in a grid-like layout, inviting visitors to easily explore and gather in the plentiful squares to socialize or relax.

Culinary experiences in Savannah offer a taste of Southern hospitality with a touch of international flair, echoing Barcelona’s own renowned food scene. Create your own tapas experience by sampling all there is to offer. Make sure to visit the city’s most beloved gems like the Spanish-style Mercer Williams House Museum and iconic Forsyth Park.

Destination dupes--Solvang, CA
Row of Danish-style houses in Solvang, California.

Instead of Denmark, Visit Solvang, California

Sitting just north of Santa Barbara, California, Solvang is a picture-perfect facsimile of a quaint Danish village. Founded by three Danish immigrants in 1911, Solvang has since become known as the “Danish Capital of America” for not just its windmills and half-timbered buildings, but its charming glimpse into true Danish culture.

Visiting Solvang allows you to immerse yourself in some of the best Danish traditions, starting with its food. From smorrebrod (open-faced sandwiches; try The Bit O’Denmark’s offerings) to flodeboller (chocolate-coated cream puffs), there are so many newfound favorites to be discovered.

Mirroring the magic of its European counterpart, Solvang has plenty of beauty to behold and things to see and do, from cycling through the rolling hills of the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley to shopping for authentic Danish treasures and even getting to see the Little Mermaid statue in the center of town that pays homage to the original statue in Copenhagen.

Disney World Hacks to Make the Most of Your Trip

Walt Disney World is one of the hottest vacation spots in the world. That means it can get busy — and expensive. But if you have some insider tips, you can make sure your vacation is the most magical experience ever. Check out these Walt Disney World hacks that you and your family can use to make the most of your trip.

Save on Walt Disney World park tickets with AAA Tickets.

Don’t: Wait in line for character meet-and-greets

Character meet-and-greets come with wait times. And that’s valuable time you and your family could be spending enjoying the rest of the attractions at the parks, like the rides, parades and shows. Waiting in lines for character after character can start to add up – and while the photo-ops are nice, they’re nothing like riding Space Mountain. It’s a huge drain on your theme park time.

What kind of Disney guest are you?

When do you go to the parks?

Do: Visit one of the many character dining options

Character dining is one of the best ways to meet your favorite Disney personalities. Walt Disney World is full of options where you and your family can meet characters while you eat. There’s no waiting in lines, no wasted time, fantastic photo-ops and amazing interactions. Some options include meeting princesses at Epcot’s Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, Mickey and friends at Chef Mickey’s, Cinderella and friends at 1900 Park Fare and more. Check with the restaurant in advance and make sure that your favorites will be there when you make a reservation.

Don’t: Weigh yourself down with a huge backpack

If you don’t need to bring something like a diaper bag, special food items or important medicine with you, it’s best to leave the backpack at home. It’s a huge pain to walk around with a bulky bag all day, and it can be hard to squeeze it onto the rides with you if you don’t have anyone to hold your stuff.

Do: Travel light

A small purse, bag or even a fanny pack will do. If you’re nervous about going to the parks without a water bottle, don’t fret! A lesser-known Disney hack is that you can get a free glass of ice water at any food service location in the park. It’s a lot more refreshing than carrying around a sweaty water bottle all day.

Don’t: Assume things haven’t changed

If you show up at the parks looking for free FastPasses, you’re going to be disappointed. FastPass+ used to be the law of the land in Walt Disney World, but the system has been replaced with pay-to-play Lightning Lanes.

Do: Adapt to new systems early

Get ahead of the game by doing your research beforehand. If you learn the rules of services like Disney Lightning Lane quickly, you’ll be able to use it to your advantage.

Disney is always introducing new and exciting changes, but it could start to feel overwhelming. To help you navigate, AAA has travel advisors who specialize in Disney vacations; it’s their job to stay on top of all the latest happenings and help you plan.

Don’t: Follow the crowd

Many people entering theme parks will automatically go to the right, meaning that those parts of the park – like Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom – will get more crowded earlier in the day.

Let's Plan Something Wonderful

Book your next trip with AAA Travel now or call 866-423-5585 to speak with a travel advisor.

Do: Forge your own path

If you go to the left in the Magic Kingdom, toward Adventureland, you’ll be able to hit a lot more rides in your first couple of hours in the park. Most theme park guests try to get to the most popular rides early in the day, but the long lines can waste time. (If you get to the park as soon as it opens, you’ll want to check out these rope drop tips.) If there’s a popular ride you want to go on, try getting in line a couple of minutes before closing at the end of the night. There are several benefits to this option. First, if you’re in line before the park closes, cast members must let you ride the ride. Second, this means you’re not missing anything, no matter how long you wait. Third, posted wait times at the end of the day are usually inflated to discourage guests from getting in line, so the actual wait time might be way faster than the posted wait time. And finally, you’ll miss the huge crowd of people all leaving the park at the same time.

Don’t: Use Lightning Lane access on shows and parades

Everybody is going to get to see the show at the same time, so there’s really no reason to use one of your Lightning Lane choices on something like that. You might get slightly better seats, but it’s not really worth it.

Do: Schedule your Lightning Lane choices early in the day

If you use up your choices earlier in the day, you have more time to keep picking more and getting more Lightning Lane rides throughout the day.

5 Common Home Updates and How They Impact Your Insurance

Home renovations are both exciting and stressful. They improve the value of your property, not to mention your overall quality of life. But from setting a budget to vetting general contractors, there’s a lot to think about when beginning a new project.

It can be easy to overlook how your home insurance factors into this equation. But changes like a new kitchen, home additions and plumbing can all affect the home insurance coverage you need. It’s important to weigh possible premium increases into the overall cost of your renovation.

Fortunately, some types of renovations can actually lower the cost of insurance.

“It’s important to keep your agent informed about changes you make to your home for a lot of reasons,” said Ashley Kehew, director of insurance at AAA Northeast. “Plus, many times there are renovated-home discounts you are eligible for as well!”

Here are five of the most common home updates and how they can impact your insurance.

New Bathroom or Kitchen

Kitchen and bathroom renovations are popular home updates that often increase the overall value of your home. However, you’ll likely see the cost of your dwelling coverage increase, which in turn, increases your premium. Improved fixtures (such as a luxury new tub or faucets) may also exceed your personal property coverage limits, meaning you’ll need to extend them.

Note that small-scale changes (such as a new carpet or updating your windows) typically don’t require a policy change.

home update

Home Additions or Home Office

Home additions can affect insurance coverage both during the renovation and after it’s complete.

During construction, you may need additional coverages, such as sewer backup coverage, if your renovation may affect your plumbing, or uninhabited home insurance, if you’re vacating the property during renovations.

An insurance agent can help you determine the coverage you may need during construction based on the scope of your project. Be sure your contractor has workers’ compensation or liability insurance, or you’ll be held liable if they sustain an injury on your property.

If your addition includes a home office, you may need to purchase a separate home office policy or endorsement. This increases the limit on your existing policy to include business property coverage. Be sure to notify your agent if you have increased business risk in your home. Remember, a portion of your insurance policy is always determined by your home’s square footage. This means that home additions almost always increase your premiums.

Upgrading Your Roof

Not only does upgrading your roof increase the overall value of your home, but you’ll be prepared to withstand common risks, such as extreme weather. As such, insurance premiums typically decrease.

If you live in a hail or hurricane-prone state, and your roof includes built-in loss-mitigation measures (such as hurricane straps or impact-proof shingles), you can often look forward to additional insurance discounts.

Building a Pool

A swimming pool can be an attractive feature that drives up home value. However, insurance companies consider pools an “attractive nuisance” and a significant liability risk. Add a slide or a diving board and expect your premiums to increase even more.

Some insurance providers may require you to install a locking fence around your pool or request that you purchase an umbrella policy. In certain instances, providers may deny coverage altogether. In almost all instances, you’ll need increased liability coverage.

Be mindful of pool landscaping during the design phase. For example, in-ground and above-ground pools are typically categorized differently by insurance companies.

Updating Your Electric or Plumbing

Bringing plumbing and electrical systems up to code lowers the risk of flooding or electrical fires, typically resulting in lower insurance premiums. Though the upfront cost of rewiring a home is significant, the insurance payoffs can go a long way to balance the cost.

With updated plumbing and electrical systems, you may even find more providers are willing to cover you, allowing you to shop around for a lower rate.

Ultimately, the impact of a renovation on your home insurance depends on the type of renovation and your existing policy.

Work closely with an insurance agent before, during and after your home renovation. It’s good practice to inform your insurance agents of cost estimates, a projected timeline, a description of the work and permits and contractor agreements before you begin work. Failure to notify your insurance company of a renovation could result in a voided policy or a denied claim down the line.

“Imagine after years of planning, you finally renovate your kitchen to create your dream kitchen. You’d want it to be rebuilt exactly as it was if you had a loss, right? Not only do these things change your replacement cost coverage on your home, they can also change your liability risk.” Kehew said. “Your agent can help you evaluate your new insurance needs to make sure you are properly covered.”

As part of the estimated $7 billion project, Universal Orlando built three new hotels around Epic Universe, which all offer hotel guests early park entry and are within walking distance to the main attraction.

The Epic campus is about 4 miles from the rest of the resort, including Universal Studios, Universal’s Islands of Adventure and the other resort hotels, all of which are operated by Loews Hotels.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Epic Universe hotels: Universal Stella Nova Resort, Universal Terra Luna Resort and Universal Helios Grand Hotel.

Universal Stella Nova Resort

The first of the Epic Universe hotels to host guests, Universal Stella Nova Resort opened its doors on Jan. 21, 2025. Universal describes the hotel as “inspired by the infinite vastness of the unexplored universe.”

On the outside, the futuristic building gleams with multicolored, jewel-toned metal tiles that reflect the sunlight and sparkle from every angle. Once you’ve walked through the front doors, it’s as though you’ve gone through a portal into the outer reaches of the cosmos. The sleek white futuristic decor is accented by views of deep space, in large-scale recreations of real NASA images.

The 750-room property includes an outdoor pool area with a hot tub, a fitness room and an arcade. For food and drink options, there are indoor and outdoor quick-service restaurants, an all-day pool bar and an evening sit-down bar. The indoor Cosmos Cafe has options like the Stella Burger (a double cheeseburger with Stella sauce) and Hot Honey Chicken Pizza. At the evening Nova Bar, there are interstellar-themed libations like the Nebula, a mezcal cocktail with strawberry-rose syrup and lime, garnished with a real rosebud.

The rooms all have two queen beds and sleep four guests. Rates are generally in the lower $200 range but can be up to about $350 in times of high demand. Inside the rooms, the decor is evocative of a luxury spaceship that doesn’t yet exist in real life, with a blue and white color palette and more interstellar artwork and lights creatively hidden inside paneling, adding to the high-tech feel. On the highly coveted third floor, a starlit hallway has a night sky overhead, with moving, twinkling lights.

Universal Terra Luna Resort

The sister property to Stella Nova, Universal Terra Luna Resort opened on March 25, 2025. The two Prime Value hotels, both a short walk or shuttle from Epic Universe, have similar layouts and identical amenities. The main difference is that, while Stella Nova has an interstellar theme, Terra Luna features, “terrestrial tones and sweeping curves to inspire thoughts of exploring new worlds,” according to Universal Orlando.

Terra Luna has the same luminous, multicolored exterior, but inside, there’s a different kind of futuristic vibe. The lobby is gleaming white, with a recurring circular theme that evokes new and undiscovered planets. Instead of Stella’s NASA deep space images, Terra has a futuristic three-dimensional holographic projection of a distant world. Its transportive third-floor hallway has a mirror installation evoking a galaxy of glowing celestial bodies.

Just like its sister property, Terra Luna has 750 guest rooms, all with two queen beds, with the same pricing structure. The hotel’s indoor restaurant, Omega Cafe and Market, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu includes options like the Big French Dipper, with shaved ribeye steak, provolone, sauteed onions and au jus, and the Earth Shake Fried Chicken Sandwich, a pickle-brined chicken thigh with coleslaw, pickles and ranch aioli. At Luna Bar, its evening cocktail lounge, there are “lunar libations” like the Hyperion, with bourbon, chipotle pineapple syrup and lemon, and the Io, which has Hendrick’s gin, yuzu liqueur, lychee puree and falernum.

Universal Helios Grand Hotel

Originally slated to start hosting guests on May 22, 2025, Universal surprised everyone by opening the Helios Grand Hotel more than a month ahead of schedule in mid-April.

True to its name, the hotel is, in a word, grand. Its gleaming copper domes rise above the new theme park, starting the sense of immersion before you even arrive. Helios is a Signature property, the first to open at Universal Orlando since Loews Portofino Bay Hotel in 1999.

The property itself is stunning, with many impressive amenities, like the pool with cabanas. But by far, the biggest perk is that Helios is the only hotel at Universal Orlando (or Walt Disney World, for that matter) to offer guests direct entrance into the park. You could, in theory, wake up 10 minutes before Epic Universe opens for the day and still be among the first inside the gates. That kind of convenience, especially in the middle of a hot Orlando day when you need a break, is unmatched.

The 500-room hotel offers standard rooms with two queen beds, king suites, club-level rooms and premium suites, many with views directly overlooking Epic Universe. The “How to Train Your Dragon”themed kids suites have one bedroom with a king bed, one bedroom with twin beds and a sleeper sofa. Standard rooms range from about $500 to over $800 per night in times of highest demand.

Even if you can’t swing the hefty price tag to stay at the Helios Grand Hotel, there’s a lot to see and do there. The Mediterranean-inspired property weaves Epic Universe’s celestial theme throughout the experience. Inside the park, enormous golden statues of Helios, the Greek god of the sun, and Luna, the Roman goddess of the moon, preside over Celestial Park, Epic’s central land. As night falls, a show over the park’s lagoon has Helios handing over the day to Luna.

As you walk into the lobby of the hotel, massive floor-to-ceiling windows provide a view of the Helios statue and Celestial Park beyond. And from the park-view rooms, all five lands are easily visible. The mythological theme extends through the property, with blue, white and gold decor throughout and animated murals tucked away in surprising places.

On the hotel’s main level, Flora Taverna serves Mediterranean-inspired fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Aurora Market offers grab-and-go options and a walk-up lobby bar. On the top floor, Bar Helios is easily the crown jewel of Universal Orlando’s dining options. The tapas-style restaurant serves creative cocktails and inventive fare and offers a 360-degree view. The most coveted tables are on the outdoor patio overlooking Epic Universe, but seats inside underneath the soaring celestial dome don’t disappoint. Both Flora and Bar Helios are open to outside guests with reservations.

The Perks of Staying on Property

Universal Orlando’s other Signature properties — Hard Rock Hotel, Portofino Bay and Loews Royal Pacific — all offer free express passes for hotel guests, which is a huge value that makes the higher room rate a much better financial proposition. In its early opening, Helios Grand isn’t offering that perk but likely will after the initial rush of guests has passed.

All three of the Epic hotels offer free shuttle transportation to all Universal parks and CityWalk, free package transportation to hotels and room charge privileges anywhere at Universal Orlando using a hotel key.

Does Car Insurance Cover Hail Damage?

It’s not uncommon for a hailstone to be the size of a golf ball and fall to the ground at nearly 100 mph. Needless to say, that piece of ice can cause major damage to your vehicle. There were 5,374 major hailstorms in the U.S. in 2024, According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The opportunity for your vehicle to be damaged is clearly real. But that begs the question: Does car insurance cover hail damage?

What Exactly Is Hail?

Hail is a solid type of precipitation consisting of balls or irregular lumps of ice. A hailstone is formed during a storm when strong updrafts carry water droplets high enough into the atmosphere that they freeze. Once the ice becomes too heavy, it falls to the ground.

Hailstones can range in size from a half-inch to four inches in diameter. According to the NOAA, the largest hailstone ever recorded fell in Vivian, South Dakota in 2010. It was eight inches in diameter and weighed nearly two pounds.

Hailstorms usually occur during the spring and summer months. The warm temperatures and high humidity during this time of year help fuel storms that create hail.

Does Car Insurance Cover Hail Damage?

The answer to this question depends on the type of car insurance you have. If you own comprehensive coverage, then yes. However, if you have basic liability or collision coverage, then your vehicle will not be protected from hail damage.

Comprehensive car insurance will cover your vehicle from risks including hail and storm damage, vandalism and even theft. Keep in mind that comprehensive coverage does carry a deductible. Policyholders may want to review the deductibles they currently carry for this coverage, as they are responsible for that portion of the claim.

Liability coverage, on the other hand, is used to pay the other driver’s medical bills and property damage should you be at fault in a crash. It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle, regardless of how the damage was sustained. Collision insurance will cover damage to your car but only when it is the result of a crash.

Almost all states require some sort of liability insurance, but comprehensive coverage is optional.

does car insurance cover hail damage

How to Fix Hail Damage

If the hail results in just a few scratches, you may be able to repair it yourself. However, it’s common for hail to break windows and create major dents in the body of a vehicle. Even if the damage seems minimal, it is best to repair it, especially if you plan on reselling the car. A car can lose significant value if its aesthetics are lacking. The best course of action to repair hail damage is to take your vehicle to an auto body shop, which can remove the dents and cover any scratches.

If the damage is done to your windshield or other windows, you should get it repaired immediately, even if it is minimal. Not only is a cracked windshield unsightly, it also impacts visibility, structural integrity of the car and the technology for advanced driver assistance systems.

How to Prevent Hail Damage

Although your car insurance may protect you from hail damage, it’s best to protect your car from any damage in the first place.

Of course, if you have the opportunity to put your car in a garage or under some other sort of covered parking, you should do it. If you can’t find a roof to park under, look for a tall building and park as close to the wall opposite the direction of the storm (i.e. If the storm is coming from the east, park on the west side of the building.) The storm’s strong winds should blow the hail over the vehicle.

However, you may not always have the option of finding shelter for your vehicle. If that’s the case, try placing blankets over the top of the car. Just make sure you secure them with duct tape or another type of fastener. Hail storms are usually accompanied by high winds that can easily knock the blankets off.

Some companies even sell covers specifically designed to protect your car from hail. If you live in an area that gets hit often with hail storms, you may want to consider investing in one.

How to Plan a Destination Wedding

So, you’re engaged. Congratulations! Now you must decide where to get married — a place that effectively signifies the beginning of your lives together. But no pressure.

Some folks get married in a church, others in a backyard or even a barn. But if you’re looking for something more along the lines of white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue waters, then a destination wedding is the perfect venue for you. But where to start?

Planning a wedding is one thing, knowing how to plan a destination wedding is another. While it’s an exciting adventure that allows you to combine your dream wedding with a memorable vacation experience, the process behind any destination wedding can be overwhelming without proper planning. We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you plan a destination wedding that reflects your unique love story and ensures a truly unforgettable celebration.

Tips for the bride and groom as you plan to head down the aisle. Listen to Episode 22 of our podcast, Merging Into Life: How to Plan for a Wedding.

Choose Your Location

The first step to planning your destination wedding is, well, picking the destination! When looking around at your options, consider things like your personal preferences, budget and the overall ambiance you’re looking for on your special day. That could be a tropical beach, picturesque countryside, a charming cityscape or anything you dream up. Assess each location’s accessibility, legal requirements and local resources while also taking into account factors such as climate, accommodation options and local attractions to ensure your chosen location aligns with your wedding vision.

how to plan a destination wedding

Create a Guest List

Next up on the destination wedding planning list: Who’s coming? Decide on the general size of your wedding party and make a preliminary guest list. It’s crucial to consider the travel expenses and availability of your loved ones when finalizing the list. Be sure to inform guests well in advance, allowing them ample time to make travel arrangements and plan accordingly. Remember, a destination wedding often entails a more intimate gathering, so carefully consider who you want to share this special day with.

Determine a Budget

Establishing a realistic budget is essential for any wedding, but even more so for a destination wedding. Consider costs such as travel, accommodation, venue, catering and local vendors. If your destination is outside the U.S., be mindful of currency exchange rates, as well as any additional fees associated with international transactions. Set priorities and allocate funds accordingly to ensure you can create the wedding experience you envision while staying within your financial means.

The ‘Sound of Music’ Echoes from Austria to Vermont in its Anniversary Year

For Kristina Von Trapp Frame, the “Sound of Music” isn’t just entertainment, it’s part of her history. And while her famous family name generates some unusual social interactions (“Everyone asks me if I can sing — that’s a ‘no’” she says), when it comes to visiting the shooting locations used in the 1965 film, the granddaughter of Maria Von Trapp becomes a fan like everyone else.

Celebrating the ‘Sound of Music’ in Austria

“I am very grateful when I’m invited to Austria and Salzburg because it is such a beautiful country with welcoming people,” Frame said, fresh off a visit to attend the opening of a new “Sound of Music” exhibit at Salzburg’s Schloss Leopoldskron, a rococo palace that stood in for the home of Capt. Georg Von Trapp in the movie and is now a hotel.

The exhibit is part of a yearlong celebration of the 60th anniversary of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical adaptation of Maria’s book about her tutelage of the singing Von Trapp children, her romance with Georg and the family’s escape from the Nazi takeover of Austria and eventual resettlement in America.

Winner of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Actress honors for Julie Andrews as Maria, the “Sound of Music” was dismissed as schmaltz even by actor Christopher Plummer, who played Georg in the film. Regardless, the movie remains a top draw for American visitors to Austria in general and Salzburg in particular, where Panorama Tours runs multiple daily bus trips to sites associated with the film and the real-life Maria and the Von Trapp family.

“Many of the tour leaders have also visited us in Vermont so they can explain what happened to the family after we fled Austria,” Frame said. A new “Sound of Music” museum opening in Hellbrunn — another Austrian filming location — also aims to give a more complete telling of the Von Trapp story, which differs quite a bit from the Hollywood version (for example, the family actually fled Austria by train, not an over-the-mountains trek to Switzerland).

Founded in 696 A.D. on the site of an even older Roman settlement, the city of Salzburg is very much a costar in the “Sound of Music”: Some of its most famous historic sites appear in the film, including the circa 1736 Schloss Leopoldskron, the Felsenreitschule, or Summer Riding School, and the Mirabell Gardens, where Maria and the children sang “Do Re Mi” around the fountain.

Recalling the puppetry scene in the movie, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre — a UNESCO World Heritage site — will present its own version of the “Sound of Music” throughout 2025, as well.

Fact and fiction blend perfectly at the Nonnberg Abbey, where the real Maria (Kutschera) was a novice before being instructed by her abbess to serve as the baroness to Capt. Von Trapp. The nunnery also appears in the movie, both in the opening scene and later when the song “Maria” is staged in the courtyard. Show up early (6:45 a.m. to be precise) for the unique opportunity to hear modern day “Ave Marias” in the Nonnberg Abbey Church, sung by the nuns’ choir.

Outside of the city center, the Hellbrunn Palace is now home to the relocated gazebo where Liesl and Rolf sang “16 Going On 17” and the Captain and Maria performed the romantic “Something Good” duet.

Of course, Salzburg’s history doesn’t begin and end with a midcentury American musical: The city is at least equally famous as the home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born here in 1756. Both the Mozart residence on Makartplatz and the Mozart birthplace on Getreidegasse are museums, and the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium — reputedly the oldest restaurant in Europe — hosts candlelight Mozart dinners with live Amadeus Consort Salzburg performances.

The Von Trapps in Vermont

Those who can’t make the journey to Austria can celebrate the anniversary of the “Sound of Music” a little closer to home. The descendants of Georg and Maria still run the AAA Three Diamond designated Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, founded 75 years ago this year.

Started as an Austrian-style alpine inn, the resort is credited with building the first Nordic (cross-country) ski area in the U.S., which still operates; a more recent addition is the excellent Von Trapp Brewery, which pairs authentic Austrian cuisine with traditional lager-style beers brewed on site. In addition to hearty cries of “Prost!,” visitors can celebrate the lodge’s anniversary with monthly events like a summer wine dinner in partnership with Austria’s Hopler winery.

Accuracy issues aside, Frame attributes the enduring popularity of the “Sound of Music” to its unexpected depth.

“I think that the movie does a good job of blending many different themes, and you recognize them when you are ready,” she said. “When you’re a child, you think the movie is only about children; when you are a teenager, you see the young love of Liesl and the mature love of Georg and Maria; when you are older you realize it’s about love of country and family values, and it’s actually quite a political movie.”

10 Retro Road Trip Stops in the Northeast

Nostalgia tourism is on the rise in 2025, and there’s no better way to embrace it than by hitting the open road to explore some of the quirkiest, most iconic roadside attractions in the northeast, like Lucy the Elephant in New Jersey and the Coffee Pot in Pennsylvania.

“Places like (these) drive tourism. They drive interest. People plan vacations around them. They tell stories we can all connect with, not to mention they are inherently fun and quirky,” said Rolando Pujol, author of “The Great American Retro Road Trip: A Celebration of Roadside Americana.”

For classic Americana and timeless charm, here’s what to add to your retro road trip itinerary.

L.L. Bean Boot

Freeport, Maine

Few things scream “Maine” like a gigantic 16-foot-tall duck boot. Standing proudly outside the L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport, this oversized icon pays tribute to the state’s rugged culture and the legendary rubber-bottom boot that put L.L. Bean on the map. Inside the store, you’ll find classic duck boots in much more reasonable sizes to help you gear up for your next adventure.

Paul Bunyan Statue

Bangor, Maine

Standing 31 feet tall and weighing 3,700 pounds, Bangor’s Paul Bunyan statue is a must-see for fans of timeless roadside attractions. This legendary lumberjack has been keeping watch over his birthplace since 1959, erected in honor of Bunyan’s 125th birthday. Skeptical about Bangor’s claim? Check out Bunyan’s “official” birth certificate at City Hall. Maine’s own Stephen King even gave the statue a brush of pop culture fame, bringing it to life in his 1986 novel, “IT.”

The Coffee Pot

Bedford, Pa.

Built in 1927, the 18-foot-tall Coffee Pot first operated as a roadside diner serving up hot coffee and hearty meals along U.S. 30. By 1937 it had been transformed into a bar with a hotel behind it. Over time, this caffeine-forward landmark fell into disrepair. Then, Bedford County and the Lincoln Highway Heritage Park Corridor stepped in to restore this iconic landmark in 2004. Today, this giant, coffee pot-shaped relic is a nostalgic tribute to the golden age of road travel.

Doo Wop Museum

Wildwood, N.J.

Step into the past  at the Doo Wop Museum, a nostalgia-inducing tribute to the 1950s and 1960s. Explore vintage mid-century artifacts, including neon signs, pop culture memorabilia and plenty of vinyl upholstery. The Neon Sign Garden features carefully restored signs from iconic Wildwood motels, like the White Star Motel and Swan Motel. Inside, you’ll find a malt shop and a gift shop stocked with merch to show off your love for the Doo Wop era.

For more offbeat attractions, check out these quirky museums in the northeast.

Lucky Snake

Atlantic City, N.J.

At the Lucky Snake within the Showboat Hotel you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported back to the heyday of arcades. This expansive complex features vintage pinball, classic video games, and water gun games, as well as mini golf and roller skating. Not only does Lucky Snake proudly boast the title of the world’s largest arcade, but it’s also home to what could be the world’s largest Zoltar, a towering 11-foot-tall fortune-teller machine.

Plan your next arcade road trip with this guide to classic arcades.

Lucy the Elephant

Margate, N.J.

Standing 65 feet tall, Lucy the Elephant has watched over the Jersey Shore since 1881, originally built as an eye-catching real estate advertisement. Now a National Historic Landmark, she welcomes visitors who come to admire her in all her glory. Snap street-view photos for free or book a guided tour inside for sweeping views across the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a fun way to step back in time at one of the top roadside attractions in the northeast.

Fingerlakes Drive-In

Auburn, N.Y.

Since 1947, the Fingerlakes Drive-In has been keeping the magic of old-school movie nights alive. As the oldest operating drive-in theatre in New York, it offers the best of both worlds — tune in through your FM car radio or enjoy the vintage charm of classic speakers. Roll up for a double feature under the stars, just like the good old days. A classic concession stand serves up hot dogs, nachos, and crispy onion rings. It’s a must-visit for anyone craving nostalgic summer fun.

TWA Hotel

JFK Airport

Step into the jet-set era at the TWA Hotel, a mid-century marvel at New York’s JFK Airport. Housed in the iconic 1962 TWA Flight Center, this retro-chic hotel celebrates the golden age of air travel. Sip cocktails in the stylish Sunken Lounge or Connie Cocktail Lounge, take a rooftop pool dip with runway views, or explore a museum filled with artifacts, interactive exhibits, and stories curated by the New York Historical Society.

Haines Shoe House

York, Pa.

Ever dreamed of sleeping inside a shoe? Probably not — but at the Haines Shoe House in York, Pennsylvania, you can do just that. Built in 1948 to promote a local chain of shoe stores, this larger-than-life roadside attraction is pure Americana. Once home to a museum and an cream shop, it’s now a one-of-a-kind Airbnb, complete with a hot tub, foosball table, and an outdoor fire pit. Featured on HGTV’s “What’s With That House” and “The Amazing Race,” this oversized shoe is a must-stay for any offbeat or retro road trip adventure.

The Flavor Graveyard

Waterbury, Vt.

Where do retired ice cream flavors go? At Ben & Jerry’s, they find a final resting place in the Flavor Graveyard where curious visitors can pay their respects to dearly departed pints like “Peanut Butter and Jelly” and “Tennessee Mud.” Perched on a scenic hilltop adjacent to the iconic ice cream factory, this funky graveyard features 35 flavors, each with a clever epitaph. It’s a bittersweet (but mostly sweet) stop for any ice cream lover.

Bike Smart, Ride Safe

Bike rides are fun, environmentally friendly and great exercise to boot. But, like with any mode of transportation, you need to make sure to keep safety in mind while on two wheels.

Did you know? AAA Northeast offers 24-hour roadside assistance for your bike, too! The free service is available to all members. Learn more.

Helmets

Wearing a helmet is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself when riding a bike.

American bike fatalities reached a record high of 1,166 in 2024, according to information from The League of American Bicyclists. Head injuries are the leading cause of death and serious injury.

When you put on your helmet, make sure the visor sits about 1 to 2 inches above your brow, and that the chin strap is snug, but not constricting. If you can fit no more than two fingers in between your chin and the strap, you’re good to go.

Check out these easy steps to properly fit a bike helmet.

You might not love the way you look in a helmet but looks don’t matter when your life is on the line.

Biking While Drunk

If you wouldn’t get behind the wheel of a car, you shouldn’t get behind the handlebars of a bike. The most recent stats reported by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety show that 21% of cyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2022 were legally drunk.

Biking in the Dark

Bike deaths peak from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., but why is that? Visibility is important on the road, especially when drivers and bikers share the same streets. During the day, you don’t have to worry too much about seeing and being seen, especially if it’s spring or summertime. However, as the day gets duskier, it’s more difficult for drivers to spot cyclists darting across the road or on the side of the street. If you’re going to be biking during this time, there are tons of bike accessories that will help make you more visible.

Sharing the road

Cyclists

Sharing the road with cars is dangerous, but it’s often necessary. Riding on congested sidewalks puts pedestrians in danger, and it’s actually illegal in some cities. Bike on the right side of the road (just like when you drive) and stay about 2 to 3 feet away from the curb. Be careful when you’re driving past parked cars – you never know when someone could open a door and clothesline you. Remember to stop at stop signs and red lights, just like someone in a car would.

Drivers

When you spot a cyclist, give them a wide berth. You’re driving something that weighs more than 4,000 pounds, while cyclists are balancing on a 15-pound, two-wheeled machine powered by their own legs. They don’t have the benefit of a car’s safety systems, and if there’s a crash, they’re probably going to get hurt. If there’s a bike lane in your city, don’t park in it. This forces cyclists to dart unexpectedly into traffic lanes. You also should not be driving in the bike lane, even if you’re just edging in by a foot or two. There could be cyclists in your blind spot, and even the cyclists that you can see are too close for comfort.

Click here for more tips on sharing the road.

What Is Hydroplaning?

Everyone knows to drive slowly on ice to avoid skidding. But driving through water can be just as hazardous, and if you are not careful, can cause a car to slide off the road.

What Is Hydroplaning?

You’ve probably heard the term before, but what exactly does it mean?

Hydroplaning occurs when a thin layer of water comes between the tires and the road. Suddenly the tires have no traction, the driver has no control of the car and is in danger of sliding off the road or into oncoming traffic. All this happens in a matter of seconds.

Cars are at greatest risk for hydroplaning during the first 10 minutes of a downpour because tires can’t quickly displace enough water from their treads. Drivers traveling 40 mph or more through water more than one-tenth of an inch deep have a higher chance of hydroplaning.

What to Do When Hydroplaning

If your car starts to hydroplane, release the accelerator slowly, said AAA’s Car Doctor John Paul. Quick deceleration or sudden steering maneuvers can put the car into a skid. Hold the steering wheel firmly and keep the front of the car pointed straight ahead. Steer gently to keep the car going forward and take your foot off the gas pedal so the car slows down on its own.

How to Avoid Hydroplaning

To prevent your car from hydroplaning, Paul said:

  • Watch the roadway; look for pooling water and big puddles. Monitor your car’s speed. “The faster your car is traveling, the more likely you are to hydroplane.”
  • Leave extra following distance between you and the traffic ahead. This will give you more time to react.
  • Ensure your tires are fully inflated and have adequate tread. AAA recommends replacing tires when the tread gets down to 4/32nds inches of tread (2/32nd inches is the minimum legal tread depth in most states).

A legal tire with 3/32nd inches of tread can take up to 225 feet to stop from 60 mph, while a tire with 5/32nd inches of tread will take 195 feet. “That 30-foot difference can be the difference between a crash and one that didn’t happen,” Paul said.

Has your car ever hydroplaned? What helped you recover? Tell us in the comments.

Why Life Insurance Through Work Isn’t Enough

It’s easy to believe that the group life insurance offered through your employer is sufficient coverage for you and your family. After all, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right? Well, not necessarily.

While group life insurance is generally affordable and convenient, it has its shortcomings. Relying solely on your life insurance through work could mean there isn’t enough to support your family’s needs.

Listen to Our Podcast

Have insurance questions? Listen to Episode 3 of our podcast, Merging Into Life: Insurance 101.

Tune In

How Group Life Insurance Limits Your Coverage

Employee-provided life insurance only offers a fixed amount of coverage for a specified period of time. The coverage amount is often a multiple of your salary, but doesn’t consider factors such as outstanding debts, mortgage obligations or a variety of future expenses.

Plus, group life coverage isn’t portable. When you leave your job – whether by choice or circumstances beyond your control – your life insurance coverage may end, leaving you and your family without protection during a period when financial stability is needed most. Starting a new policy at that point may come with higher premiums, as well, particularly if your health has changed since your initial enrollment in the employer plan.

Another significant drawback of life insurance through work is the lack of customization. These plans are designed to cater to a diverse group of employees, and as a result may not address everyone’s specific needs. Your financial situation, lifestyle, responsibilities and future plans are unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach to life insurance may not be sufficient. The great thing about individual policies is that some offer cash value, which is a great way to help plan for your retirement at the same time.

Get the Best of Both Worlds

Should you get life insurance through work? Sure, work life insurance is a valuable benefit, but it shouldn’t be considered a stand-alone solution for comprehensive coverage. Getting a personalized, individual life insurance plan ensures that your unique circumstances are accounted for in addition to being portable and offering the flexibility to adapt to life’s changing stages. You also get to choose whether you’d like a term or permanent policy.

Regular assessments of your coverage and consulting with a life insurance agent can help ensure that your life insurance strategy remains aligned with your evolving needs, providing you and your loved ones with the peace of mind they deserve.

Northeast Pump Prices Budge Only Slightly on Increased Demand, Tightening Inventories

A primary factor keeping a lid on gasoline prices is the cost of crude oil, which began this week at a four-year low after OPEC+ member countries over the weekend agreed to increase production through June. The decision comes after the Saudi government last week indicated that it supported boosting production even if it led to lower crude prices. That’s an about-face from the group, which implemented production cuts in 2022 in an effort to boost oil prices even if it meant losing global market share to the United States and other oil-producing nations.

If it weren’t for lower oil prices, gasoline prices might otherwise be climbing, based on the most recent supply and demand data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). After weak numbers through March and most of April, demand for gasoline has rebounded somewhat in recent weeks, with last week’s total surpassing 9 million barrels a day, according to the EIA. The figure is more in line with expectations for this time of year and stronger than the comparable weeks of 2024 and 2023.

The bump in demand comes as gasoline inventories continue to tighten: National inventories declined by 4 million barrels last week, the EIA reported. Refiners have been slow to wrap up spring maintenance activities and are more focused on producing higher-margin jet fuel and diesel, leading to gasoline supplies declining in 11 out of the past 12 weeks. There are now 225 million barrels of gasoline in storage, according to the EIA, down from 229 million the prior week and 227 million last year.

“Cheaper oil can wipe out potential price increases that ordinarily would be caused by higher demand and falling inventories,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “Additionally, market participants are uncertain whether the recent boost in demand is a sign of things to come or just a blip.”

AAA Northeast’s May 5 survey of fuel prices found the national average up 2 cents from last week ($3.14), averaging $3.16/gallon. The May 5 national average price was 10 cents lower than a month ago ($3.26) and 49 cents lower than this day last year ($3.65).

Region Current Price* One Week Ago One Month Ago One Year Ago
Connecticut $3.07 $3.06 $3.09 $3.75
New Jersey $3 $2.96 $3.06 $3.62
New York $3.10 $3.09 $3.14 $3.73
Massachusetts $2.97 $2.96 $2.99 $3.60
Rhode Island $2.96 $2.94 $2.99 $3.63

*Prices as of May 5, 2025

As of May 5, Mississippi and Louisiana had the lowest prices in the nation, at $2.65 and $2.70, respectively. California and Hawaii held the highest prices in the nation at $4.77 and $4.49, respectively.

Spring Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist

With spring comes the sweet sound of rolling thunder (and we’re not talking about the weather!).

Motorcyclists itch for the first nice day of spring, when the sun is shining, the temperature hits above 60 degrees and the conditions are just right. Before that long-awaited ride, take care of spring motorcycle maintenance to get ready for the road.

Ready, Set, Go

When getting your bike out of winter storage, give it a fresh oil change and have a professional do a thorough inspection to check on the brakes, fluid levels, tire pressure, battery and other mechanics.

Once the big spring motorcycle maintenance items are taken care of, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends a quick assessment before every ride. The acronym T-CLOCS reminds riders to look at their tires, controls, lights, oil, chassis and stands.

Insurance Basics

A specialized motorcycle insurance policy can provide full coverage for you and your bike.

Like car insurance, a minimum amount of liability coverage for bodily injury or property damage caused to others by you, is required in almost every state. Other types of coverage, like collision, which can help cover the cost of repairs if your bike is in a crash, and comprehensive, for damages from events such as fire, theft or vandalism, are usually optional.

The beauty of a specialty policy is that it can provide a wider range of customizations, a perk that any motorcycle owner can appreciate. Each policy is as unique as its rider. When requesting a quote, mention if your bike has any modifications, if you own a vintage model or have more than one bike, which will likely affect your coverage needs and premium. If you frequently carry passengers, you may also want to consider adding guest passenger liability.

Depending on state and provider, discounts are sometimes offered for multi-bike owners, mature riders, training course completion and memberships in rider associations or clubs. Check with your insurance agent to find out about the laws where you live, coverage options and available savings.

At the Roadside

Whether it’s just a drive around the neighborhood or you’re headed all the way to Sturgis, no one wants their trip delayed by unexpected holdups. You should always be prepared to “shift gears” when needed. If you do find yourself stuck at the side of the road, pull over to a safe location and call roadside assistance for any repairs too significant to fix on your own.

AAA Plus and Premier members can sign up for motorcycle coverage for 24-hour roadside services including jumpstarts, tire inflation, fuel delivery and towing for all street-legal motor bikes. Roadside assistance is also included with motorcycle insurance policies acquired through AAA, so you can get the help you need and keep on riding.

Safety and Gear

Motorcyclists are five times more likely to be injured and 28 times as likely to be killed than car occupants, according to the most recent research by the National Traffic Safety Administration.

Don’t forget that motorcycles have different reaction times and are less visible to surrounding vehicles. Follow traffic laws, never drive impaired and always wear a U.S. Department of Transportation-compliant helmet and other protective gear.

Sharing the Road With Motorcycles

If you don’t own a motorcycle, you probably know someone that does. Keep their safety in mind when sharing the road, especially between May and September when riders are more likely to be out.

  • “Look twice, save a life.” Check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before switching lanes and at intersections.
  • Signal before changing lanes or merging and allow enough time to determine a motorcyclist’s intention before proceeding.
  • Increase following distance and provide enough time to stop in an emergency.

There’s a camaraderie among motorcyclists that can often be seen by a passing wave or a cool thumbs up. An upside-down peace sign from one rider to another means to keep your two wheels on the ground. In other words, stay safe out there.

Graduation Gifts to Get Your Grad Financially Ready

Whether high school or college, graduation not only marks the end of a years-long undertaking, but it also launches students into all the financial responsibility of adulthood. This milestone is the perfect opportunity to help the graduate in your life get started on the road to successfully navigating their own finances.

“The biggest hurdle to get anybody going on their personal finances is to just get it started,” said Ted Lyons, vice president of financial services at AAA Northeast. “Once that initial step is made, then you need to help the soon-to-be graduates in your life understand that it’s up to them to continue it.”

Let’s run through some of the most practical graduation gifts to consider.

Life Insurance Policy

Contrary to what you may believe, it’s actually never too early to start thinking about life insurance. Although young people might not be worried about buying a policy right after graduation, they may find themselves missing out on the benefits of having a long-term policy plan in place.

Consider the value in investing in their future family during their 20s and 30s, when health concerns are typically not much of a factor. Moreover, since they’re unlikely to look that far ahead, this is one gift they most likely wouldn’t have thought to get themselves.

CD or Savings Bond

These two are classic graduation gifts for a reason. A certificate of deposit (CD) or savings bond makes an ideal starting point for a young adult still trying to get their financial bearings. Both contribute positively toward your graduate’s more immediate savings goals, though a savings bond retains its value regardless of inflationary rates and — unlike a CD — remains free from taxation. In the end, either gesture gets your graduate thinking more practically about their financial future.

Online Savings Account

Many new graduates still haven’t created a savings account. Opening an online savings account is one of the most important ways in which you can aid a recent graduate, Lyons believes. “Once you learn to pay yourself first, you’ll really be able to watch your money grow,” he said.

To get the most value out of their burgeoning savings accounts, graduates should also set up an automatic payroll deduction directly into their savings. This inherently makes future saving a priority and establishes smart financial habits.

Investments

Unless your graduate is particularly precocious when it comes to the financial world, they may not realize the value in wisely investing their money. That’s where you can come in with an initial investment of your own. Stocks may be the first thing you think of, but the risk involved makes them a poor choice for a graduation gift. Instead, you might opt for a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund, which presents a crash-course in investing and plants the seeds for long-term investment plans. Over time, this seed investment provides a solid foundation upon which your grad can build.

Retirement Planning

Like a life insurance policy, retirement planning isn’t typically at the top of the priority list for recent graduates. But it certainly ought to be, especially if they’re earning an income. Roth IRAs are tax-free, and a contribution to this forward-looking account — no matter how generous — can go a long way toward getting your graduate set up for his or her golden years. Encouraging your graduate to maximize 401k plans that may be offered through their future jobs is also a win for their financial security, especially when a company match is available.

Knowledge Starter

All the above suggestions help graduates to consider how their money can flourish in the years ahead. But if you’d rather not commit to a specific graduation gift, you could always present a more general way to emphasize the importance of their personal finances.

Perhaps you could set up a consultation with a financial advisor, who can guide your graduate to establish a financial plan that works for their specific goals. Even a gift as simple as a top-rated finance book or a subscription to budgeting software is incredibly valuable in the long run.

In the end, what your graduate needs most is an education in the financial realities they’re about to confront. Whatever form that takes will inevitably put them in better shape to make informed decisions with their money, and with any luck, your graduation gift could even play an integral role in their future.

Fly and Drive: Florida and Alabama Along the Gulf Coast

When you want sun, sand and surf, make your way to the Florida Panhandle and Alabama Gulf Coast for road trip adventures that won’t disappoint. With airports in both Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama, you can start and end your trip wherever works best for you. Thanks to a wide range of activities and attractions along the way, you won’t have any trouble filling your itinerary between flights.

Get the ‘Blues’ in Pensacola, Florida

In Pensacola, there’s plenty of entertainment to help you make the most of your time. A not-to-miss event is watching the U.S. Navy Blue Angels practice from the flight line behind the National Naval Aviation Museum on Naval Air Station Pensacola. You won’t find a better view of this aviation team in action. Visitors ages 18 or older need a government-issued ID for entrance to the base, but admission is free. You can rent a chair for the show or climb into the bleachers, but get there early as these go fast. After the practice, head into the museum to learn more about our country’s naval aviation history.

If you love baseball, head to a Pensacola Blue Wahoos game near downtown Pensacola. A Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, the Blue Wahoos take to the diamond every April through September, so catching a game is easy. Before or after the game, you can find tasty Southern cuisine at Five Sisters Blues Cafe (try the fried chicken!) or satisfy every appetite from one of the food trucks at The Garden at Palafox + Main.

Of course, you can’t go to Pensacola and not enjoy the beaches. Find your spot in the sand, where you can soak up some rays or float in the beautiful blue water. For more adventures, take to the skies with Radical Rides for some parasailing, watch for dolphins at sunset with Frisky Mermaid or paddle after dark with Glow Paddle.

Step Back in Time in Mobile, Alabama

For the final leg of your road trip, head northwest to Mobile for a taste of history, mystery and strolls through the gardens.

Your first stop could be the USS Alabama. Tour this historic battleship to see how it and its crew served in World War II. Follow up your tour with a visit to the USS Drum submarine. Next up, the Mobile Carnival Museum documents the rich history and traditions of carnival through elaborate costumes, historical photographs and videos of past parades and balls. You could even climb aboard a float for a commemorative photograph.

For an evening to remember, step aboard the Perdido Queen paddlewheel riverboat for a murder mystery dinner cruise on the Mobile River. Immerse yourself in the action and see if you can figure out who the killer is before dinner is over. The key is to join in the fun and roll with the punches. You could be called upon to solve the crime!

Wrap up your trip with a stroll at Bellingrath Gardens, where 65 acres of lush gardens surround a 10,500-square-foot estate. You can walk the gardens throughout the year, but if you want to see something specific, check the website to see what’s in bloom while you’re in town. Using Your GPS Safely

For those of us who are directionally impaired, driving with a GPS device is like having your own personal sherpa. These days many people won’t drive without them.

GPS is operated by the U.S. Department of Defense and was developed for military use in the 1970s. Civilians gained access in the 1980s. GPS provides users with positioning, navigation and timing services using satellite signals. Mazda unveiled the first GPS system for cars in 1990, and it’s now standard in cars and on smart phones.

Thanks to GPS, road trips are now a breeze. Besides guiding you to your destination, GPS apps and infotainment systems from some vehicle manufacturers can alert you to upcoming hazards such as construction, lane closures and nearby emergency vehicles, including AAA Roadside Assistance trucks.

However, constantly glancing at the screen to make sure you don’t miss the next exit can be distracting — and anything that takes your focus off the road can be dangerous

Set Your GPS Before You Drive

The only safe way to use GPS is to program your route in the navigation system before you shift your vehicle out of park.

“This gives you time to adjust additional settings, such as avoiding toll roads or adjusting the volume of audible directions,” said Brian Butterworth, director of AAA Northeast’s Driving School.

Entering information into your GPS while driving or simply looking away from the road to check the screen diverts your attention and could lead to a collision. While statistics do not indicate which crashes were caused by using GPS, about 13% of all traffic crashes in 2023 were influenced by a distracted driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“While driving, keep your focus on the road ahead — do not look at the screen. Instead, rely on the audible directions to tell you where to go,” said Butterworth.

AAA Driving School students learn how to use a GPS safely during the classroom instruction section on distracted driving.

Voice Commands Are Not the Answer

Voice to text may be legal in some states to set navigation if the device is properly mounted, but that doesn’t mean it is a safer option. These systems have not been shown to reduce crash risk or decrease distraction, Butterworth continued. “While your mind is focused on the voice-activated system, you’re not focused on the road ahead.”

Another safety tip: While driving using a GPS, if you miss a turn or are not in the correct lane to follow the GPS guidance, don’t panic. Backing up or making a sudden turn increases the chances of a collision. Instead, give the GPS time to recalculate the route and let the device get you back on track.

So, enjoy all the perks a GPS provides — just remember to keep your eyes on the road.

Do you depend on your GPS? Despite its benefits, do you ever find it distracting? Tell us in the comments.
